Hans Adam Sontag
and his wife Anna Elisabetha Pfaff
and Some of Their Descendants
Sixth Generation

CHARLES E.6 SUNDAY (Frederick5, Daniel4, Andrew3, Jacob2, Hans Adam1) was born at Silver Lake, Kosciusko County, Indiana, on 15 June 1870, a son of Frederick Sunday and his first wife Lucetta Weller, and died at Elkhart County, Indiana, on 19 June 1948.[1] He married at Adams County, Indiana, on 3 August 1892 BERTHA LORETTA HERR.[2] She was born at Adams County on 23 July 1879, a daughter of Peter Herr and Lydia Ann Cronaster. She died at Elkhart County on 14 September 1945.[3]

Charles Suinday was the sixth and last child of his parents. Soon after his birth his mother died. When Charles was sixteen months old his father remarried. His step-mother, Elizabeth, was ther only mother he would know. He was, in time, joined in the family by three half-siblings.

Charles and Bertha both grew up on farms in Indiana. When they married, Charles was twenty-two, and Bertha Loretta Herr only thirteen. Bertha's age is not a mistake. It is supported by her age and years married reported in each census record. Their four children were born when Bertha was aged 16, about 18, 20, and 22. According to the 1940 Census, Charles and Bertha had limited education, he completing fourth grade, she completing second.[4]

Charles Sunday was a railroad man. His occupation was recorded in censuses as follows:[5]

Census Location Occupation
1900 Lake Twp., Kosciusko Co. day laborer
1910 Elkhart laborer, railroad
1920 Elkhart N[ew] Y[ork] C[entral] R. R. signal
1930 Elkhart electric engineer, steam R.R.
1940 Washinton Twp., Elkhart Co. retired railroad man; genereal repair man

The 1900 Census reportred this family at Silver Lake village, Lake Township, with three children, ages fivem four, and three months. These were the only three children Bertha had borne.[6]

Eva died later in 1900, and Dorothy was born in 1902. The 1910 Census reported the family with children ages fourteen, thirteen and five.[7] This is the last record I have found of their son Fred.

Daughter Virginia Leona married at the age of sixtreen, in 1912, divorced in 1914, and married again in 1916. The 1920 Census found her and her second husband, Oscar Poper, living on Virginia Avenue in Elkhart. With them were their son, Rolland, and Oscar's brother, Warren.[8] Daughter Dorothy had also married at the age of sixteen, in 1919. The 1920 Census found Dorothy and her husband, Peter Shonholt, living with Charles and Bertha Sunday in Elkhart.[9]

Virgie must have divorced soon after that census, as she married, for her third husband, William Glanders, about 1922. William, a World War I veteran, worked in 1930 as "cutter, brasive pool," and in 1940 as a sheet metal worker in a corset shop. In 1930 they lived in Elkhart with her two sons from two marriages, Rolland Poper, 12, and Ralph Glanders, 6.[10] That same census reported Peter Shanholt in Elkhart, working as a chauffeur/truck driver for a lumber company. With him were his wife Dorothy, and their son, Gail, 10.[11] Charles and Loretta in 1930 were empty-nesters nearby in Elkhart.[12]

The 1940 Census reported William and Leona Glanders in Elkhart with their son Ralph, 16. Leona worked on cover cases for a band instrument manufacturer.[13] Her son by her prior marriage, Rolland Poper, also lived in Elkhart, with his wife May Jane and their daughter Carol Jean. Rolland, 22, worked as a punch press operator for a band instrument factory.[14] Dorothy Shanholt, widowed in 1935, lived in Elkhart with her son Gail, 20. Both were reported as laborers.[15] Charles and Loretta Sunday, ages 69 and 60, continued to live in Elkhart County.[16]
