William Tirrell
and his first wife Rebecca Simpkins
and Some of Their Descendants

JAMES BRADFORD8 TIRRELL (Cornelius7, Benjamin6-5, Gideon4-3, Rebecca Simpkins2. Nicholas Simpkins1) was born at Weymouth, Norfolk County, Massachusetts, on 20 April 1820 a son of Cornelius Tirrell and his wife Jane Pratt,[1] and died there on 6 November 1852.[2] He married at Weymouth on 11 May 1843 MARIA ANGENETTE BAYLEY.[3] She was born at Weymouth on 29 May 1820, a daughter of Samuel P. Bayley and his wife Thais Loud.[4] She died at Weymouth on 31 August 1910.[5] Maria (Bayley) Tirrell married as her second husband at Weymouth on 4 August 1862 ISRAEL JUSTIN FEARING.[6] He was born at Massachusetts on 14 July 1833, a son of Israel Fearing and his wife Clarinda Ellen White.[7] He died at Andersonville, Sumter County, Georgia, on 24 July 1864.[8]

James and Maria married at the ages of 23 and 22 respectively. He worked in the boot business as a leather cutter. They had two children, and a third on the way, before James' untimely death at the age of 32 from disease of the heart and lungs. Maria, a 32-year-old widow, was left with children aged six and three, and gave birth to their third child a month later.

The 1860 Census reported Maria's family as follows:[9]

10.
Line Name Age Sex Occupation R.E. P.E. Birthplace
9. Maria A. Tirrill 40 F $1000 $200 MA
10. Ellen M. Tirrill 14 F MA
11. Harriet Tirrill 11 F MA
12. James B. Tirrill 7 M MA
13. I. J. Fearing 27 M boot cutter MA
14. Ira Litchfield 21 M carpenter MA

Fearing and Litchfield appear to be boarders, probably taken in to help Maria financially. However this would change, as two years later Maria would marry I. J. Fearing.

Israel Justin Fearing fought in the Civil War. He enlisted on 2 August 1862 in the First Massachusetts Regiment of Heavy Artillery. Two days later Israel, age 29, married Maria A. (Bayley) Tirrell, age 42. Then he left with his regiment, organized on 20 August. The First Massachusetts Heavy Artillery was at first stationed around Washington, D.C. They became part of Grant's Army of the Patomac on 17 May 1864. Israel was captured at the Battle of Cold Harbor on 3 June, placed in the prisoner camp at Andersonville, and died there on 24 July.[10]

Maria Angenette (Bayley) (Tirrell) Fearing, widowed for the second time at the age of 44, would live as a widow for 46 more years. The Tirrell and Fearing families became further intertwined, when Maria's daughter, Ellen Maria, married Israel's brother, Francis Henry Fearing, in 1867. The Tirrells and Fearings lived in proximity to each other in South Weymouth. The 1870 Census reported Maria's family:[11]

Line Name Age Sex Race Occupation R.E. P.E. Birth
24. Fearing, Maria A. 50 F W keeping house $1900 $400 MA
25. Tirrell, Hattie H. 21 F W no occupation MA
26. Tirrell, James B. 17 M W works in boot factory MA

The parents of Isreael and Francis Fearing lived in the next house:[12]

Line Name Age Sex Race Occupation R.E. P.E. Birth
30. Fearing, Israel 61 M W ice dealer (retired) $4000 $3600 MA
31. Fearing, Clarinda 60 F W keeping house MA
32. Fearing, Clarence W. 20 M W attending school MA

Clarence attended college. The very next household, at the same address, included the children of Maria Fearing and Israel and Clarinda Fearing:[13]

Line Name Age Sex Race Occupation R.E. P.E. Birth
33. Fearing, Francis H. 28 M W cigar pedlar $600 MA
34. Fearing, Ellen M. 23 F W keeping house MA
35. Fearing, A. Maria 1 F at home MA

In 1880 the households of Maria Fearing, her mother-in-law Clarinda Fearing, her son, James B. Tirrell, and her daughter and son-in-law Francis and Ellen Fearing, all appeared on the same page in South Weymouth. Maria Fearing, age 60, lived alone. Clarinda Fearing, recently widowed, age 70, lived with her son, Clarence W. Fearing, a teacher. Francis Fearing, 37, a wholesale pedlar of twine, paper bags, etc. lived with his wife Ellen, 33, and their children Angenetta, 11, Clarinda, 9, and Albert, 3. James B. Tirrell, 27, "pedler for another," lived with his wife, Sarah, 24, and their children, Bertha, 5, Arthur, 3, Lewis, 1, and a newborn. Daughter Harriet Tirrell had died in 1876.[14]

The 1900 Census reported Maria A. Fearing, 80, a household of one, but at the same residence as her son James B. Tirrell, and before her grandson Arthur Tirrell. Only two households after James Tirrell, resided Albert Fearing, his wife and two children, and his father Francis Fearing[15] (brother-in-law and son-in-law to Maria). Ellen (Tirrell) Fearing had died the previous year.

Maria Angenette (Bayley) (Tirrell) Fearing died in 1910, age 90 years, from "morbid changes due to senile condition."[16]
