FRANCIS XAVIER1 BREUX (also known ans Fancis Xavier Brooks) was born at Pompierre-sur Doubs, Doubs department, France, on 12 June 1817 a son of Jeanne Francoise Breux.[1] He died at Landis Township, Cumberland County, New Jersey, on 3 February 1898.[2] He married at Pompierre-sur-Doubs on 19 January 1840 JULIA ETIENNE.[3] She was born at France on 13 September 1822, a daughter of Nicolas Eitenne and his wife Claudine Gindre. She died at Millville, Cumberland County, on 1862.[4]

According to their marriage record, Julia was a laundress, her father had died on 29 January 1827, and her mother was forty-six years old, or born about 1793-4.[5]

Francis and Julia lived in Pompierre-sur-Doubs, where they had five children. According to the obituary of Eugene V. Brooks, he had been a resident of America for sixty-four years,[6] which would have placed his immigration to America about 1858-9. However, the 1860 Census indicated that daughter Mary, age three, was born in New Jersey,[7] and her grave marker indicates she was born in 1857,[8] which would place their immigration in 1857 or earlier. We know they were in France in December of 1851, when Eugene was born. If the family came to America together, they came some time between 1851 and 1857, probably closer to the latter date. In America they used the surname of Brooks, although occasionally they were still recorded as Breux.

The 1860 Census reported them at Millville (Port Elizabeth Post Office) as follows:[9]

Line Name Age Sex Occupation R.E. P.E. Birthplace
6. Francis Brooks 42 M wood cutter $150 $50 France
7. Julia Brooks 38 F France
8. Joseph Brooks 18 M wood cutter France
9. Alfred Brooks 13 M France
10. Eugene Brooks 9 M France
11. Sallie Brooks 15 F France
12. Mary Brooks 3 F NJ
13. William Brooks 3/12 M NJ

The following decade brought many changes. Julia died in 1862 at the age of forty. Alfred enlisted in the Union Army at the end of 1863. At some point in the war he was injured, and was discharged from the Army hospital in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey, in 1865.[10] Joseph married in 1865, Alfred in 1867.

I have not found Francis Brooks in the 1870 Census. Alfred lived in Camden County, New Jersey, with his wife and two children.[11] Eugene, age twenty, was a farm laborer at the residence of Charles and Martha Lord, Landis Township.[12] I have not located the other childen in that census.

The 1880 Census reported Francis Brooks, 63, shoemaker, living alone in Landis Township.[13] Joseph Breux, 39, shoemaker, lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with his wife Myra.[14] Alfred Brooks, 36, laborer, lived at Millville, with his wife and six children.[15] Eugene Breax, 28, servant, worked as a driver and lived in Philadelphia with his wife and three children.[16] Daughter Mary Christine, 23, lived in Philadelphia with her husband Tobias Panz and their three children; Tobias was a porter in a store; Mary could neither read nor write.[17]

Francis Xavier Brooks died in 1898 in Landis Township, age eighty-one years.[18]

The obituary of son Eugene Victor Brooks was reported in the Brooklyn Standard Union:[19]
