JEAN BAPTISTE ALFRED2 BREUX (Francis1), later known as ALFRED JOHN BROOKS was born at Pompierre-sur-Doubs, department of Doubs, France, on 15 January 1843, a son of Francis Xavier Breux and his wife Julia Etienne .[1] He died at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 9 March 1898.[2] He married at Newark, Essex County, New Jersey, on 3 July 1867 FANNIE CAROLINE RIEFF.[3] She was born at Newark on 7 October 1850,[4] a daughter of Charles Henry Rieff and his wife Caroline Marie Girod. She died at Philadelphia on 11 December 1898.[5]
Jean Baptiste Alfred Breux grew up in Pompierre-sur-Doubs, France. When he was about fourteen years old he came to America with his parents and three siblings. In America he called himself Alfred John Brooks. Fannie Caroline Rieff grew up in Newark, the eldest of seven children of parents who had been born in Europe and married in America.
At the age of twenty, Alfred Brooks enlisted in the Union Army during the civil War. He was assigned to Company G, third regiment of New Jersey Cavalry, mustered on 6 January 1864.[6] His regiment participated in General u. S. Greant's overland campaign from May 19 to July 27 of that year. By August 17 they had been reassigned to the Shenandoah Valley. His Find-a-Grave page, created by Joseph Clarence Reker, states:
According to Prisoner of War records, he was captured at Charlestown, Virginia on August 20, 1864.[7]
I have not found this record independently. Considering the location of their actions, he was probably captured at Charles Town, West Virginia, not Charlestown. According to his military record he was wouded and survived the war, and was discharged from the U.S. Army hospital at Newark on 23 June 1865.[8]
Alfred described himself to census takers as a laborer. The family tradition is that he was a glassblower. Their first child, Alfred, was born at Newark in 1868, indicating they at first lived with or near Fannie's parents. After that, they appear to have moved around southern New Jersey. The following table lists the locations given in birth and death records of children and census records. Note that Clayton is seven miles south of Glassboro, Millville is seven miles south of Vineland, and Landis is the Township in which the boro of Vineland was located:

The 1870 Census reported Alfred, 27, laborer, and Fanny, 20, at Waterford Township (Berlin Post Office), Camden County, with children Alfred, 2, and Charles, born in February of that year.[9] Charles must have died young, as another child given the name of Charles was born in 1873.
The 1880 Census reported the family on Oak Street, Millville, consisting of Alfred, 36, Frances, 29, son Alfred, 12, Julia, 10, Charles, 7, Fannie, 5, Daisy, 3, and Emma, 1.[10] Caroline was born in August of the Census year. The following year, 1881, saw the deaths of two of their children, Daisy in April, and Emma in May. The family continued to grow, with Frank born in 1882 and William in 1884. Then they had two children who died as babies, Louise and Walter. Eldest son Albert married about 1886-7. Then Alfred and Fannie had two more children, Harry in 1889 and Marguerite in 1892. Fannie was forty-one at the birth of her fourteenth child.
Alfred Brooks died in 1898 at the age of fifty-four, from acute appendicitis.[11] Fanny died later that year, at the age of forty-nine, from a strangulated hernia.[12] Of their fourteen children, nine were still living. At their mother’s death the children were ages 30, 27, 25, 23, 18, 16, 14, 9 and 6.
The 1900 Census reported Alfred Brooks (the son) with his wife and five-month-old daughter at Landis Township, Cumberland County.[13] This entry was followed immediately by a household headed by son Charles Brooks:[14]

The daughter Daisy had died in 1881, but the last child, Marguerite, was nicknamed Daisy.
Some of the family moved to Greenfield, Hancock County, Indiana, as Harry died there in 1902, and Caroline married there in 1903, and remained there the rest of her life. Back in New Jersey, Julia married in 1903, Frances in 1904
The 1910 Census found William and Frank in Clarksburg, Harrison County, West Virginia, where they both worked in the glass industry.[15] That census repoorted the Alfred Brooks family at Landis Township; the following entry included Charles H. Brooks, 36, glass blower, and Marguerite Brooks, 18, farm laborer on the home farm. The head of the household was Hubert Rush, 35, farmer, and included his wife Julia (Brooks) Rush, 38, farm laborer, and their son Hubert, 2.[16] Frances (Brooks) Lowe lived at Mantua Township, Gloucester County, where her husband, Frank, 30, was superintendent of a hardware store. Their three children at the time were 4, 1, and three months.[17] Carrie (Brooks) Winslow lived in Greenfield with her husband, Marshall, 30, insurance agent, and their two children.[18]
Charles Brooks remained unmarried. The 1920 Census reported him at Hastings, Adams County, Nebraska, where he worked as a store man for wholesale auto tires.[19] Ten years later he was back at the home place, Maple Avenue, Landis Township, with his sister and brother-in-law, Julia and Hubert Rush. He had no employment at that time.[2o] According to the 1940 Census, Charles resided at Long Beach, Los Angeles County, California, where he managed a rooming house with five male lodgers.[21] He died in Los Angeles County in 1959.
Julia (Brooks) Rush continued to live in Landis Township, where her husband farmed, and later, in 1940, had his own carpentry business.[22] Their son, Hubert Rush, Jr., had married by 1940, and lived in Landis Township, where the census reported him working as a truck driver for a petroleum company, and his wife Dorothy was a school teacher.[23] He married in 1946 as his second wife Helen Zycinski, who was also a school teacher.[24]
Frances (Brooks) Lowe died in 1916, at the age of forty, leaving her husband, Frank, age 36, with children ages 9, 7, 4, and a newborn. The 1920 Census reported Frank and his children living with Frank's brother at Bellmawr Village, Camden County; Frank worked as a clerk in a hardware store.[25] Frank and Frances' first-born son Charles married but had no children. Charles and his wife May died in a traffic accident while on vacation in New Mexico in 1952.[26] Frank and Frances' last-born child, Frank, born on the day of his mother's death, married before the 1940 Census, when he was found at Bellmawr village with his wife and daughter, and working as a machinist helper in a ship yard.[27] He and his wife Anna had six children, and he later worked many years for General Dynamics at Quincy, Norfolk County, Massachusetts, as a cost estimator.[28]
Caroline (Brooks) Winslow lived the rest of her life in Greenfield, where her husband was an insurance agent, then a real estate agent, and in 1940 postmaster.[29] Their son Harold Winslow as of 1930 was an assembler for electrical manufacturing at Mansfield, Richland County, Ohio.[30] Their daughter Kathleen was living in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana, in 1940, where her husband, Clifford Rigsbee, was service manager in a department store.[31]
Frank Brooks remained in Landis Township, where he was a glass worker in 1920, laborer on a poultry farm in 1930, and farmer for the state school in 1940.[32]
William Brooks remained in Clarksburg, where he married, and continued working in the glass industry.[33]
Marguerite "Daisy" Brooks remained in the household of her sister, Julia (Brooks) Rush, where she helped out with the housework;[34] she never married.
Alfred Brooks and his wife Fanny Rieff had the following children:
