Much information on the ancesty of Fannie Caroline Rieff is found on the web site findagrave.com, on pages created by Joseph Clarence Reker. This informant provides documentation for his information. It is in general agreement with what I have found from other sources, and so I consider it to be reliable.
GEORGE1 GIROD was born at France on 1806[1] and died at Newark, Essex County, New Jersey, on 15 March 1869.[21] He married at France on 1826 SUSANNE ELIZABETH MORIN. She was born at France on 10 February 1806 and died at Newark on 22 September 1872.[3]
Based on the birth places of their children, the Girod family came to America some time between 1831 and 1835; probably 1833. They settled in Newark, and George found work as a locksmith. The 1850 Census reported the family as follows:[4]
Line | Name | Age | Sex | Occupation | R.E. | Birthplace | Other |
30. | George Girod | 45 | M | locksmith | France
31. | Elizabeth Girod | 46 | F | France

40. | Samuiel Vyrassad | 56 | M | watch case maker | Switzerland

In the following decade most of the chidren married, Caroline in January of 1850, Eugenie about 1853, Emily in 1856, and Julius before 1859. In 1860, the families of Eugenie and Julius lived in the same dwelling as George and Susanne (called Elizabeth in most records), in distinct households. The 1860 Census reported the senior Girod family as follows:[5]
Line | Name | Age | Sex | Occupation | R.E. | P.E. | Birthplace |
29. | George Giron | 53 | M | locksmith | $800 | $200 | France |
30. | Elisabeth Giron | 55 | F | France
31. | Emil Giron | 18 | F[?] | locksmith | NJ
32. | Selina Giron | 17 | F | NJ | |||
33. | Emma Giron | 11 | F | NJ |
On the line for Emma, the census taker had written "dumb by fits." Julius, married with one child, a watch case maker, lived at the same dwelling,[6] as did daughter Eugenie and her first child; her husband was absent at the time of the census.[7] Daughter Caroline lived in Newark with her husband and five children. I have no further information on son George beyond the 1850 Census.
The decade of the 1860s, traumatic in the history of the United States, also brought change to the Girod family. Caroline's family grew to seven children, while her husband fought in the Civil War for four years. Eugenia and her husband moved to Missouri, where she had her second child. Julius and his wife, in Newark, had three additional children. Emile enrolled in Company G., Second Regiment New Jersey Volunteers, on 28 May 1861 as a corporal, and was promoted to Sergeant on 28 September 1862. His regiment fought at Bull Run, Antietam and Fredericksburg. He was discharged at the end of his three-year commitment on 21 June 1864, a little more than a week before the Battle of Gettysburg.[8] Celina married in 1866. George, the father, died in 1869.
The 1870 Census reported Elizabeth [thet is, Susanne], 66, living at Newark; with her were her son, Emile Girod, 30, locksmith, keeping the shop, and granddaughter, Celine Rieff, 17.[9] This entry was preceded, with just one intervening entry, by Julius Girod, 35, works in watch case manufacturer, Eliza, 32, Elizabeth, 11, George, 5. Julian, 3, and Walter, 1.[10] Daughter Caroline and her husband Charles Rieff lived elsewhere in Newark with five of their children.[11] The census reported Eugenia, 40, at Pendleton Township (Farmington Post Office) Saint Francois County, Missouri, with her husband, John Schneider, 40, farmer, and their two children, Eugenia, 15, and Eugene, 2.[12]
Susanne Elizabeth (Monin) Girod died in 1872; according to one of Joseph Reker's sources, she was "said to be beautiful, ruling the household with kindness."[13]
The 1880 Census found Caroline (Girod) Rieff, widow, living in Newark with three of her children.[14] Eugenie had died in Missouri. Emily (Girod) Tondeur died in 1876 in Newark. Julian lived in Newark, reported in the 1880 Census as follows:[15]

Emil Girod, 40, had married in 1875, and was reported in the 1880 census in Newark living with his wife's parents, Jacob and Elizabeth Stengel. The census taker noted after Emil's name, "insane asylum; insane," and checked that he could not read or write.[16] He died in 1889. Celina (Girod) Drees lived in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, with her husband, who was a carriage smith.[17]
George Girod and his wife Susanne Morin had the following children:
CAROLINE MARIE2 GIROD (George1 ) was born at Beaucourt on 26 December 1827 a daughter of George Girod and his wife Susanne Elizabeth Monin. She died at Newark on 24 February 1884.[38] She married on 12 January 1850 CHARLES HENRY RIEFF, Sr.. He was born at Switzerland on 9 June 1828,[39] a son perhaps of Joseph and Henriette Rieff. He died at Newark on 25 June 1873.
According to information posted at Find a Grave by Joseph Reker,
Charles was the only child of Henry Rieff and his first wife, Henriette. They were French Swiss and came to America when Charles was a young child.[40]He does not indicate his source for this information. However, the 1850 Census is suggestive of another possible connection. It reported at Newark:[41]
Line | Name | Age | Sex | Occupation | R.E. | Birthplace | Other |
29. | Charles Rieff | 22 | M | Zinkmaker | Germany
30. | Caroline Rieff | 22 | F | France |
This is followed immediately by another household in the same dwelling:[42]
Line | Name | Age | Sex | Occupation | R.E. | Birthplace | Other |
31. | Joseph Rieff | 44 | M | Zinkmaker | Germany
32. | Harriet Rieff | 46 | F | Germany
33. | Louis Bersy | 22 | F | France |
What do we make of this entry? I have no idea what a "Zinkmaker" is. Charles was called a "steel polisher" in a later census. We should not make an issue of "Germany" as place of birth: Germany did not exist as a unified country at that time, but as a region; a census taker might think of Switzerland as part of the German region. Harriet Rieff, based on her age, would have been born about 1803-4. Henrietta Rieff, who appears with Charles and Caroline Rieff in the 1860 Census, had an age indicating a birth about 1804-5. Joseph and Harriet in the 1850 Census are old enough to be Charles' parents. Unless further documentation can be found for the statement at find a grave, I will consider Joseph and Henrietta the most likely parents of Charles.
Caroline Girod, born in the Balcourt territory of France, came to America with her parents when she was about six years old (plus or minus two years). She was the oldest of eight children; she was married six months after the birth of her youngest sibling.
The 1860 Census reported this young but growing family at Newark:[43]
Line | Name | Age | Sex | Occupation | R.E. | P.E. | Birthplace |
35. | Charles Rief | 32 | M | laborer | $150 | Swiss
36. | Caroline Rief | 30 | F | Swiss
37. | Fanny Rief | 9 | F | NJ | |||
38. | Selina Rief | 7 | F | NJ | |||
39. | Charles Rief | 3 | M | NJ | |||
40. | Emma Rief | 2 | F | NJ | |||
1. | Emilie Rief | 3/12 | F | NJ | |||
2. | Henriette Rief | 55 | F | Swiss |
The most likely explanation is that Henrietta is Charles' mother, and his father died some time in the previous decade.
Charles Rieff enlisted in the Union Army on 19 August 1861, for three years; he re-enlisted on 20 December 1863, and was discharged on 22 July 1865. Entering as a Private, he became a Corporal, and on 1 March 1863 a Sergeant. He served in Company D of the Fifth New Jersey Regiment until transferred on 6 November 1864 to Company F of the Seventh New Jersey Regiment.
Rieff's Fifth Regiment participated in the following action:
The 1870 Census reported the family living at Newark, consisting of Charles Rief, 40, steel polisher, Caroline, 38, keeping house, Charles, 14, works in wood yard, Emma, 10, at school, Emil, 9, at school, and Julian, 5, at home.[45] Daughter Fanny was married with two children, living in Camden County, New Jersey. Celina, 17, was living with her grandmother, Elizabeth Girod, at Newark.
Charles Rieff died in 1873 at the age of 42, leaving his widow with children at home ages 16, 13, 10 and 8. Emilie married in 1877. The 1880 Census reported Caroline Rieff at Newark, 52, keeping house, with three sons, Charles, 22, harness trimming, Emile, 18, cutlery, and Julius, 15, hatter.[46] Caroline died in 1884 at the age of 56.
Charles Henry Rieff, Jr. married for the first time in 1885; his wife died 3 days before their first anniversary. He married Johanna Elena "Ella" Bevensee in 1892. They were 35 and 37 years old respectively. The 1900 Census reported them living with her mother in Newark:[47]
Line | Name | Related | Race | Sex | Born | MS | B | FB | MB | Occupation |
85. | Bevensee, Christine | head | W | F | Dec 1825 | Wd | Germany | Germany | Germany | capitalist |
86. | Rieff, Ella B. | daughter | W | F | Sep 1855 | M | Germany | Germany | Germany
87. | Rieff, Charles H. | son-in-law | W | M | Apr 1857 | M | NJ | Switzerland | France | patternmaker |
Other information contained in this census: Christine had six children, three of whom were living, Ella had no children. Christine and Ella came to America in 1857. Ella and Charles had been married seven years.
In 1910 Charles was listed as head of the household. Besides his wife, Christiana Bevensee, 84, was still in the household. Charles was a tool maker in a machine shop.[48]
Charles Rieff and his wife Caroline Girod had the following children:
