William Wright Collins and Selina Hibbert, Immigrants
and some of their Descendants
Second Generation

HENRY2 COLLINS (William1) was born at Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire, England, on 9 March 1847 a son of William Wright Collins and his wife Selina Hibbert. He died at Pawtucket, Providence County, Rhode Island, on 28 October 1911. He married at Lonsdale, Smithfield Town (later Lincoln Town), Providence County, Rhode Island, on 25 November 1868 ELIZABETH HOLLINGWORTH. She was born at Ashton-under-Lyne on 26 April 1847, a daughter of Elijah Hollingworth and his wife Hannah Duncalf. She died at New York City, New York, on 15 April 1932.[1]

Henry Collins and Elizabeth Hollingworth were both born at Ashton-under-Lyne about six weeks apart. Elizabeth went with her family to America when she was one year old; Henry went with his family to America when he was twelve years old. Their fathers came to America together in 1848, arriving at New York on the Harriet Augusta on 24 March, 1848.[2] Henry's father soon returned to England; but Elizabeth, with her mother and two older siblings, arrived at New York on 5 January 1849 on the St. Patrick.[3] By the time of the census, 1 June 1850, Elizabeth and her family (called "Jollyworth" by the census taker), had settled at Cumberland, Providence County. Her father worked in a textile mill as a spinner.[4]

Elizabeth's family soon moved to Connecticut, where the 1860 Census found them, in the town of Franklin, New London County, Connecticut (Lords Bridge Post Office). Elizabeth's father, older brother, and older sister Ann all worked in a factory.[5] Henry's family, newly arrived in America, lived at Smithfield where his father and uncle Joseph worked as machinists, and his older sister Sarah worked as a weaver in a cotton mill.[6]

Representative Men and Old Families of Rhode Island reported some of the highlights of Henry's life in 1908:[7]

Henry Collins, son of William Wright Collins, was born March 9, 1847, in Ashton-under-Lyne, England. His meagre education, secured mostly at night schools, was obtained in Pawtucket, and when a mere lad he served a three years' apprenticeship at the Fales & Jenks Machine Company, of Pawtucket. Mr. Collins then entered the employ of his father, who admitted him as a partner in the business in 1882. Mr. Collins has marked ability in the mechanical line, and is the inventor of a number of ingenious and useful appliances. In politics he is a Republican, but he has never been an office seeker, preferring to give his time and attention to his business interests. He attends the Congregational Church. Mr. Collins is a prominent Mason, holding membership in Jenks Lodge, no. 24 A. F. & A. M., of Central Falls; Pawtucket Chapter, No. 4, R. A. M.; Holy Sepulchre Commandery, No. 8, K. T. He also holds membership in Good Samaritan Lodge, No. 8, I. O. O. F.

The Collins family machine shop was central to Henry's life, and with it, he prospered. It was originally called Collins Brothers, for his father, William, and uncle Joseph. About 1869 or 1870 his uncle Joseph left, and by 1871 the city directory was calling it Collins & Son, for William and Henry.[8] In 1884 his father retired from the business, and Henry and his brother Joseph became the joint proprietors of Collins Brothers. In 1894 the four-story factory was equipped with a 40-horse power engine, planers, lathes, drills, and other mechanical appliances, and employed sixty workers.[9]

The 1870 Census found Henry and Elizabeth Collins living at Pawtucket with his parents; the family included their nine month old son Charles.[10]

The 1880 Census reported Henry and Elizabeth and family on Mill Street, Pawtucket, with their four children:[11]

In the decade of the 1890s three of the children married. The 1900 Census reported the Henry Collins family at 895 North Main Street, Pawtucket. The family consisted of Henry, 52, proprietor of a machine shop, Elizabeth, 51, son William, 19, and Elizabeth's unmarried sister, Ann Hollingworth, 55.[12] Son Charles, his wife and two daughters, lived at nearby Attleboro, Bristol County, Massachusetts; he worked as a machinist.[13] Son Elijah, recently graduated from Columbia College, lived at Manhattan, New York City, New York, with his wife and their first child; he was a teacher.[14] Daughter Alice had moved to England, where she lived with her husband, Philip Wilson, a journalist.

The 1910 Census reported Henry and Elizabeth, and her sister Ann, still at 895 North Main, Pawtucket.[15] Son Charles lived at Pawtucket with his wife and six children; he was foreman at a machine shop.[16] Elijah lived at Cortlandt, Westchester County, New York, with his wife and three children; he was a professor at Columbia College.[17] Alice was still in England, now with three children.[18] Son William Collins, a machinist in a machine shop, lived at 824 North Main Street, Pawtucket, with his wife and first child. In a separate apartment in the same dwelling lived William's aunt, Esther (Collins) Hollingworth, 50.[19]

Henry Collins died in 1911 from organic (mitrial) heart disease and nephritis.[20] His widow, Elizabeth, lived another twenty-one years. In 1920 she lived at her home on Main Stret, Pawtucket, alone, but with relatives nearby.[21] The 1930 Census found her in the Bronx, New York City, living with her daughter Alice and son-in-law Philip Wilson and three grandchildren. Her son-in-law had moved back to America and was working as a writer of books and for newspapers.[22] She died in 1932 in New York City, although her death was recorded at Pawtucket, from arteriosclerosis acute dilation of the heart.[23]
