JOHN5 HARNISH (Abraham4, Michael3, John Jacob3, Martin1) was born at Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, on 26 September 1827 a son of Abraham Harnish and his wife Elizabeth Huber. He died at Lancaster County on 19 April 1875. He married on 1856 ELIZABETH K. SCHOPF. She was born at Pennsylvania on 9 October 1831, a daughter of Henry Schopf and his wife Elizabeth Kauffman Kauffman. She died at Lancaster County on 15 August 1893.[1]
According to the Harnish Friendschaft, John Harnish the son of Abraham and Elizabeth was born on 23 August 1815 and married on 5 September 1829 Maria Herr, who was born on 25 April 1819 and died on 15 December 1893.[2] A card in the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society [LMHS] cardfile gives the same birth date.[3] This is in error. According to the Genealogical Record of Rev. Hans Herr, the Maria Herr with the above dates married a John Harnish with the above birth date, who was the son of David Harnish and Elizabeth Snavely.[4] Furthermore, according to the 1850 Census, the John Harnish living in the household of Abraham Harnish was 20 years old, or born about 1829-30. [5] The John Harnish in the 1860 Census, living in the township indicated by Abraham's will, was 32 years old, or born about 1827-8
The card in the LMHS cardfile for John Harnish follows:[6]

John Harnish farmed on land on Hans Herr Road, West Lampeter Township, which he received from his father's will. The land remained in the family over a hundred years, until sold by Wenger and Maud (Harnish) Ranck. The 1860 Census reporterd John's family there, John owning no real estate.[7] In 1870, after his father's death, John had real estate valued at $13,285. The 1870 Census reported the family as follows:[8]
Line | Name | Age | Sex | Race | Occupation | R.E. | P.E. | Birth |
17. | Harnish, John | 42 | M | W | farmer | $13,285 | $3,512 | PA |
18. | Harnish, Elizabeth | 39 | F | W | keeping house | PA

20. | Harnish, Elizabeth | 9 | F | W | at home | PA

John Harnish died in 1875 at the age of forty-seven. Amos, his son, died the following year, at the age of twelve. Widow Elizabeth Harnish continued on the farm with her two remaining children, reported in the 1880 Census: Elizabeth, 49, keeping house, Jacob, 22, son, farmer, Lizzie, 14, daughter, at home, plus a servant and two laborers.[9]
John Harnish and his wife Elizabeth Schopf had the following children:
