The Ancestors and Descendants of
Albert Martin (1855-1923)
The Gochenauer Family

JOHN GOCHENAUER was born at Pennsylvania, on 20 November 1805, and died on 31 August 1872.[1] He married probably before 1828 LYDIA ELLIOT. She was born at Pennsylvania on 11 November 1805 and died at Smithville, Providence Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, on 7 August 1880.[2] I have no further information on their ancestors.

The John Gochenauer family was reporterd in Martic Township, Lancaster County, in every census from 1830 to 1850; in 1860 they were reported in Providence Township. As Providence Township was created in 1853 out of Martic Township, the change of address does not necessarily indicate that they moved. The 1830 Census reported the John Gauchenour family consisting of one male and one female in their 20s, and a female under 5.[3] This corresponds with what we know of the family from other sources: John, 24, Lydia, 24, and daughter Keziah, 1.

The 1840 Census reported a John Gaughenaur family of eight, which could possibly be explained as follows:[4]

male 30-39 age John, 34
female 30-39 age Lydia, 34
female 10-14 age Keziah, 11
male 5-9 age unknown
female 5-9 age Ann Eliza, 6
female 0-4 age Mary, 4
male 0-4 age Amos, 2
female 0-4 age Barbara, 0-1

The male 5-9 years of age could be another son, as their is a gap of five years between Keziah and Ann Eliza; or it could have been another relative or boarder living with the family at that time.

In 1850 the John Gouchenauer family of Martic Township was reported as follows:[5]

Line Name Age Sex Occupation R.E. Birthplace Other
20. John Gouchenauer 44 M laborer PA
21. Lydia Gouchenauer 44 F PA
22. Ann Gouchenauer 15 F PA
23. Amos Gouchenauer 12 M PA
24. Barbara Gouchenauer 10 F PA school
25. Elizabeth Gouchenauer 8 F PA school
26. Martha Gouchenauer 6 F PA school

Daughter Keziah, 22, was living with her husband, Henry Eckman, 24, at West Lampeter Township, Lancaster County.[6] Daughter Mary, 14, was at Conestoga Township, Lancaster County, living with the family of Samuel (61) and Rachel (63) Stauffer, and Elizabeth Stauffer, 37. Samuel was a farmer.[7]

The 1860 Census reported the John Gouchnauer family at Providence Township, Smithville Post Office, consisting of John, 54, laborer, personal estate of $75, Lidia, 54, Mary, 24, Martha, 14, Alphred, 6, and Franklin, 2.[8] Mary and Martha are their children. Alphred and Franklin could possibly be the children of Mary, although they are reported elsewhere. The 1860 Census reported the following family at Providence Township, New Providence Post Office:[9]

Line Name Age Sex Occupation R.E. P.E. Birthplace
40. Henry Eckman 33 M laborer $800 $50 PA
1. Keziah Eckman 31 F PA
2. Albert Martin 4 M PA

Albert Martin is the son of Mary Gochenauer, Keziah's sister. I have not found Amos, Barbara or Elizabeth in the 1860 Census.

The 1870 Census did not report John Gochenauer, although he was alive for another two years. It reported Lydia Gochnauer living with the family of her daughter, Martha, at Providence township, Smithville Post Office, as follows:[10]

Line Name Age Sex Race Occupation R.E. P.E. Birth
6. Miller, Joseph 26 M W farm laborer $200 PA
7. Miller, Martha 24 F W keeping house PA
8. Miller, Henry 3 M W PA
9. Miller, John 9/12 M W PA
10. Gochnauer, Lydia 64 F W PA

This document further stated that John was born in August and that Lydia could not write. The census of that year reported Henry (43) and Keziah (41) Eckman at Providence Township, Smithville Post Office. Thier family included Keziah' grandson Alber Martin, 14, Keziah's sister, Elizabeth Gochenauer, 26, described as a domestic servant, and William Zittle, 3, relationship unknown.[11] Mary Gochenauer, 34, domestic servant, and her daughter, Addie Gochenauer, 2, lived at Strasburg Township, Strasburg Post Office, in the household of Jonathan (55) and Fannie (56) Stauffer.[12] I have not found the chidren Ann, Amos, or Barbara in this census.

In 1880 widow Lydia Gochenour, 74, was living with her daughter and son-in-law, Keziah (51) and Henry (53) Eckman, in Providence Township. Also in the household were William Zittle, 13, described as a nephew of the Eckmans, and Annie Lanions, 9, a niece.[13] I have not identified how they are related. Daughter Anna (Gochenauer) Shaub, 46, lived in West Lampeter Township with her husband Martin, 65, laborer, and children Lydia, 12, Amos, 8, and Henry, 6.[14] Daughter Mary Gochenaur, 42, worked as a servant in the household of Franklin (41) and Mary (41) Weaver in West Lampeter Township.[15]

John and Lydia Gochenauer are buried at Smithville Church of God.[16]
