Descendants of Edward Maxfield
of Quebec
Second Generation

JOSEPH EDWARD2 MAXFIELD (Edward1), consistently called Edward in all records after his baptism, was baptized at Notre Dame de Quebec parish, Quebec city, on 2 March 1812 (ND de Q 1812/3:27), a child of Edward Maxfield and his wife Marguerite Bourbon. By age seventeen both his parents were dead.

Edward Maxfield married as his first wife ADELAIDE BELANGER at Saint Chrysôstome parish, Lauzon, Levis County, Quebec, on 8 January 1833 (St Chr 1833:52). Adelaide was born about 1809/10, according to her age at death, to Pierre Belanger and Marguerite Rai. The baptism and burial records of thier children throughout their marriage point to a residence in Saint Chrysôstome parish, Levis County, and to Edward's occupation as a cobbler (cordonnier).

Adelaide died on 9 October 1842 and was buried in Saint Chrysôstome parish on 11 October 1842 (St Chr 1839-47:83), age about thirty-two years.

Edward Maxfield soon remarried, at Saint Chrysôstome parish on 30 January 1843, to MARIE THERESE DEMERS (St Chr 1839-47:91), who was born at Quebec about 1821/2 (US Census 1880: 532:441A).

Edward and Therese Maxfield were soon migrating to rural areas south of Quebec city. The 1843 baptismal record for son Edward, indicated the family still resident at Saint Chrysôstome parish. In 1847, son Antoine was baptized at Saint Chrysôstome, but the record indicated they resided at Somerset, in Megantic County, Quebec. There are some gaps in baptismal records which I have not been able to fill. Sons George (1848), Francois Simon (1852) and Francois (b. 1854) were reported born at Inverness, Megantic County. I do not have a baptismal record for George; the first Francois was baptized at Saint Calixte de Pleisisville, and buried there the following year; the second Francois was baptized at Sainte Julie de Somerset. Napoleon (1857) and James (1860), were born at Wolfestown, Wolfe County, according to their USA naturalization records, I do not have their baptismal records. Baptisms in December 1860 and 1862 were in the parish of Saint Ferdinand d'Halifax, although the family residence is given as Wolfestown. After that date, the family appears in the church records of Saint Julien de Wolfestown. Perhaps some of this confusion is the result of new parished being created in newly settled areas during this period. The church records from 1843 to 1861 do not give Edward's occupation. From 1861 onwards he is described as a farmer (cultivateur) except for one record in 1864 that calls him a peddler (colporteur). The 1880 USA Census reported Edward and Theresa Maxfield with their son Napoleon at Newburyport, Massachusetts.

Edward Maxfield died in 1880, Theresa in 1884. She was buried at Saint Etienne de Lauzon parish (Beaudoin)

  1. EDWARD3 MAXFIELD b. at Levis Co., Quebec, on 7 November 1843
  2. MARIE THERESE3 MAXFIELD
    • b. at Quebec about 1845
      • NOTE: burial record gives her age as 8 years and 6 months, which would make her perhaps a twin of Edward. However Edward's baptismal record has been found, and there is no mention of a twin. If the figures were reversed by mistake (6 years and 8 months) it would put her birth close to Joseph's, although Joseph's birth is not known precisely. So this birth date is problematic.
