Hezekiah married HARRIET ELSEA at Muskingum County, Ohio, on 28 October 1830 (Muskingum Co. M). Harriet was born at Virginia about 1800 (census records).
The 1840 census (418:416) reported this family at Norwich Township, Muskingum County, immediately after his mother, Mary Maxfield:
age | male | female |
30-39 | 1 | 1 |
20-29 | 1 | |
15-19 | 1 | |
5-9 | 2 | 1 |
0-4 | 1 |
The couple in their thirties and the three children between five and nine, correspond to what I know about this family. The others I cannot identify.
According to his gravemarker, Hezekiah fought in the Mexican War.
The 1850 census reported Hezekiah at two locations. "Kinzey" would appear to be a nickname for Hezekiah. The family was reported in Union Township, Muskingom County, Ohio, as follows (718:446B):
Name | Age | Sex | Occupation | R.E. | Birthplace | Other |
Hezekiah Maxfield | 49 | M | waggon maker | $300 | VA
Harriet Maxfield | 49 | V | VA
Mary E. Maxfield | 18 | F | OH | |||
William Maxfield | 17 | M | waggon maker | OH | school
John L. Maxfield | 9 | M | OH | school |
The census also reported at Buffalo Township, Guernsey County, Ohio, residing at a hotel (684:311):
Name | Age | Sex | Occupation | R.E. | Birthplace | Other |
Kinzey Maxfield | 46 | M | merchant | $600 | VA
Kinzey Maxfield | 17 | M | merchant | OH |
Perhaps father and son were temporarily at the latter location on business. As I find no further record of William, it is possible that William refers to Kinzey, perhaps as a middle name. Hezekiah Maxfield was the fourth postmaster of the village of Norwich in Union Township (His Muskingum 417).
The 1860 census also reported Hezekiah at two locations. The family was reported at Union Township, Muskingum County (1019:1:484B):
Name | Age | Sex | Occupation | R.E. | P.E. | Birthplace | Other |
Hezekiah Maxfield | 59 | M | merchant | $800 | $3600 | VA
Harriet Maxfield | 60 | F | has none | VA
Mary Maxfield | 28 | F | has none | OH
John Maxfield | 19 | M | clerk in store | OH |
Kinsey Maxfield, age 59, no profession, born Virginia, with real estate valued at $5800, was also reported with his brother Thomas at Washington Township, Muskingum County (1018:1:156B).
The 1870 census reported Hezekiah twice, at Tolano, Champaign County, Illinois. Hezekiah and Harriet appeared with son Kinzy and family and son John at Tolano village (193:1:387A) as follows:
Name | Age | Sex | Race | Occupation | R.E. | P.E. | Birth | Other |
Maxfield, Hezekiah | 63 | M | W | retired preacher | $1600 | $1000 | VA | father for. b. mother for. b. |
Maxfield, Harriet | 70 | F | W | at home | VA |
Hezekiah also appeared at Tolano village in the household of his daughter, Mary, her husband George Ferris, and their six children, as follows (193:1:385A):
Name | Age | Sex | Race | Occupation | R.E. | P.E. | Birth | Other |
Maxfield, Hezekiah | 65 | M | W | retired merchant | $4000 | $4100 | VA |
The 1880 Census (362:437C) reported this family at Sheridan Township, Poweshiek County, Iowa:
Name | Related | MS | Sex | Race | Age | B | Occupation | FB | MB |
Heze. Maxfield | self | M | M | W | 72 | VA | farmer | DE | MD |
Harriet Maxfield | wife | M | F | W | 79 | VA | keeping house
John L. Maxfield | son | S | M | W | 35 | OH | VA | VA |
Harriet probably died before 1885, as she does not appear in the 1885 Iowa census with her husband and son John (IA Census 1885:256:257). Hezekiah Maxfield, age 77, farmer, born Virginia, did appear in the census with his son John. Hezekiah Maxfield died in 1885 (Ia Cem).
Hezekiah Maxfield and his wife Harriet Elsea had the following children:
