Second Generation

JOHN² MAXFIELD (John ¹ ) was born at Salisbury, Essex County, Massachusetts, on 23 October 1680, a son of John Maxfield and his wife Elizabeth Hammond .^[1] He died some time after writing his will at Salisbury on 2 September, 1751, and before it was proved 2 March, 1752.^[2] He married SARAH ORDAWAY of Newbury, Essex County, Massachusetts, after they published their intentions to marry at Salisbury on 13 November, 1708.^[3] Sarah was born at Ipswich, Essex County, Massachusetts, on 20 January, 1681, a daughter of Edward Ordaway and his wife Abigail Bond.^[4] She died at Salisbury, on 25 July, 1730.^[5]

John was twenty-three years old when his father died. That same year, 1703, he was recorded as a soldier in Salisbury.^[6] He married five years later, shorthly after his mother's remarriage, at which time he would have received an inheritance from his father.

John Maxfield bought and sold the following land parcels:

25 June 1701, John Maxfield of Salisbury for 20 s sold to Phillip Greely of Salisbury; creek grass land in Salisbury, about ¾ acre; out of right of John Cole.^[7]
8 September 1715, Sarah Ordaway of Newbury, widow of Samuel Ordaway late of Ipswich, deceased, for £ 9, sold to Doctor Phillemon Dean of Ipswich, a parcel of 10 rods in Ipswich; her son-in-law John Maxfield and Sarah his wife of Salisbury, she being the only daughter of her deceased husband, endorsed the sale.^[8]
10 March 1715/6, John Maxfield, Nathaniel Maxfield and Joseph Maxfield of Salisbury, yeomen, for £ 16, sold to Joseph Dow of Salisbury (alias Hampton in Province of New Hampshire), weaver; a lot is Salisbury (alias Hampton in Province of New Hampshire) in Graveley Ridge Division in the Cow Common, original right of John Cole, lot # 43 of that division, together with a little lot of meadow about ¾ acre of upland meadow.^[9]
8 December 1718 John Flanders of Salisbury, blacksmith, for £ 17, 4 s, 3 d, sold to John Maxfield of Salisbury, yeoman; a parcel of land in Salisbury near the upper meeting house, bounded by Maxfield land, meeting house, 3 acres and 70 rods.^[10]
1 January 1720/1, Jacob Flanders of Kingstown, Province of New Hampshire, yeoman, sold to John Maxfield of Salisbury, Massachusetts Bay, one full share in the right in common in Kingstown, of undivided land.^[11]
6 January 1720/1 John Maxfield, Joseph Maxfield, and Nathaniel Maxfield, all of Salisbury, for £ 16, sold to Edward French of Salisbury, a lot of upland in Salisbury, in Good-Ales-Swamp division, in original right of John Cole, lot #55, 1st Division, about 8 acres.^[12]
7 Apr 1737, Philip Griffin of Salisbury, husbandman for £ 30, sold to John Maxfield of Salisbury, husbandman, 100 acres of land in Chester, New Hampshire.^[13]
19 November 1746, Joshua Purington of South Hampton, (alias Hampton Falls), New Hampshire, yeoman, in consideration of the half part of a certain parcel of salt marsh in Salisbury, which was conveyed to him by John Maxfield and Joseph Maxfield of Salisbury as by deed bearing even date with the present, sold to John Maxfield and Joseph Maxfield, one half part of salt marsh or meadow ground, the Higgelty Pigelty, whole piece containing 16 acres, divided equally in quality and quantity.^[14]

John Maxfield was called a resident of Salisbury, Massachusetts, in all records, although he acquired land in Kingston and Chester, New Hampshire. His will also refered to land in Middleton, Connecticut. His first three children did not survive him. John Maxfield wrote his will at Salisbury on 2 September, 1751. John Maxfield and his wife Sarah Ordaway had the following children:

JOHN³ MAXFIELD b. at Salisbury on 27 December 1709;^[15] d. before wife's second marriage in 1738; m. at Haverhill, Essex County, Massachusetts, on 27 February 1733/4 ANN DOW,^[16] b. at Haverhill on 7 May 1715,^[17] d. after birth of child on 21 Auguat 1746 and before second husband's remarriage on 14 July 1748, child of John Dow and his wife Sarah Browne. Ann (Dow) Maxfield m. as her second husband at Haverhill on 21 September 1738 ABIEL BARKER,^[18] who was b. at Andover, Essex County, on 15 July 1697.^[19] He had previously m. on 28 September 1732 HANNAH STILES, who d. at Andover on 6 June 1737. After Ann's death Abiel m. as his third wife, at Andover on 14 July 1748 JANE LUNIGER.^[20]

OBADIAH³ MAXFIELD b. at Salisbury on 4 September 1712;^[23] d. prob. bef. 1751, as he is not mentioned in his father's will.

SAMUEL³ MAXFIELD b. at Salisbury on 12 April 1714.

MICHAEL³ MAXFIELD b. about 1715/6.

ELIZABETH³ MAXFIELD b. at Salisbury on 30 April 1716;^[24] d. bet. 1774 and 1794;^[25] m. at Hampton, NH, on 27 March 1738 STEPHEN COLBY,^[26] b. in 1712, d. at Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, in 1745.^[27]

WILL OF JOHN MAXFIELD
(Essex County Probate 330:340-341)

In the name of God. Amen. The second day of September A. D. 1751, I John Maxfield of Salisbury in the County of Essex in the Province of Massachusetts Bay, yeoman, being weak in body but of perfect mind and memory, thanks be to God, therefore calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make this my last will and testament, that is to say: Principally and first of all I give and recommend my soul unto the hands of God, who gave it, and my body I commend unto the earth to be buried in decent Christian burial at the discretion of my executor, Nothing doubting but at the General Resurrection I shall receive the same again through the mighty power of God, and as touching such worldly goods or estate, which it hath pleased God to bless me with in this life, I give, devise and dispose of ye same in the following manner:
Imprimis: I give and bequeath unto my son Samuel and to his heirs and assigns forever, ye one half of my eighty acre lot of land in Chester in ye Province of New Hampshire, to be divided crossway ye lot and according to quantity and quality, and also ye one half of my part or share of land in Middleton in Connecticut Colony and also my lot of marsh in Hoals--farm by Walton's mill, he my said son Samuel paying unto my daughter Elizabeth Colby fifty-three shillings and four pence in one year after my decease.
Item: I give and bequeath to my son Michael and to his heirs and assigns forever, all my homestead lands, buildings, and appurtenances, in Salisbury, also my land in Cains Brook Division, and ye other half of my eighty acre lot of land in Chester, also the other half of my part or share of land at Middleton in Connecticut Colony. Also all my right in Kingstown , both in land and in the saw mill, also my marsh in Higglede Pigledey which I had of Joshua Rivinton and my pew in ye meeting house, he my said son Michael paying unto my daughter Elizabeth Colby ten pounds thirteen shillings and four pence in four year after my decease--that is to say, to pay her three and fifty shillings and four pence a year, yearly, on every year, four year after my decease. And I do hereby constitute, appoint and ordain my said son Michael my sole executor to this my last will and testament.
Item: I give and bequeath unto my grandson Samuel Colby son of my daughter Elizabeth Colby--twenty acres of land at Chester which I am to have of Phillip Griffin.
Lastly, all other of my goods or estate unbequeathed I do give to my executor and I do hereby revoke all former wills and bequeaths by me made and do rattify this and no other to be my last will and testament which my hand and seal ye day and year above written.
