Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Third Generation

JOSEPH3 MAXFIELD (Joseph2, John1)was born at Salisbury, Essex County, Massachusetts on 4 April 1737[1] a son of Joseph Maxfield and his wife Joanna Richardson. He died sometime after 1810. He married about 1763 LOVE ________. She was born before 1755,[2] and died at Weare, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, on 11 July 1800.[3]

Joseph Maxfield fought in the Seven Years War, known in America as the French and Indian War. Eighteen year old Joseph fought in Ebenezer Newell's company of Massachusetts soldiers from 3 May 1755 to 17 Decembr 1755.[4] In March, 1756, he fought at Crown Point with a company from Salisbury under Captain William True.[5]

Joseph Maxfield participated in the following land transactions in Salisbury and Newbury, Essex County and South Hampton, Rockingham County, New Hampshire:

Joseph Maxfield is described as a yeoman, of Salisbury, in all these documents. He signed his name with a mark, indicating he probably could not write his name.

Joseph Maxfield was a member of Second Church (Congregational), Salisbury, in 1778.[13]

Some time between the last land transaction noted above, in 1779, and the birth of his last child in 1784, the Joseph Maxfield family moved to Weare. Census records from 1790 and 1800 report the family living there.

The 1790 census,[14] which misspelled his name "Joseph Mansfield," reported a household of three males over 16, 2 males under 16, and 3 females. The three males over sixteen would probably be Joseph (father), Joseph (son) and Richard. There should have been three males under 16: Benjamin, Amos and Thomas. Perhaps one was absent at the time of the census. The three females would be Love (mother), Love (daughter), and Prudence.

The 1800 census,[15] with the possible persons referred to, is as follows:

In the decade from 1790 to 1800 sons Joseph, Richard and Benjamin had all married, and daughter Prudence married one week before the 1800 census.

The 1810 census[16] reported Joseph Maxfield at Bradford, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, his household consisting of one male over 45, one female over 45, and one female 26-44. The male is, no doubt Joseph; the younger female is probably daughter Love. The older female could be a housekeeper or an otherwise unknown second wife. I have no further record of Joseph Maxfield beyond the 1810 census.

Joseph and Love Maxfield had the following children:

  1. JANE4 MAXFIELD "Jenny" b. at Salisbury on 21 April 1764;[17] m. at Weare on 12 April 1785 EBENEZER MARSHALL.[18] Jenny was bp. at Second Church (Congregational) Salisbury on 29 October 1766.[19]

  3. RICHARD4 MAXFIELD b. at Salisbury on 12 August 1769.
  4.
