Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Sixth Generation

ISAAC6 MAXFIELD (Warren5, Timothy4-3-2, John1) was born at New Bedford, Bristol County, Massachusetts, on 4 September 1803, a child of Warren Maxfield and his wife Rebecca Peckham. He died at Tisbury, Dukes County, Massachusetts, on 16 August 1890.[1] Isaac Maxfield married as his first wife at New Bedford on 1 October 1822 CLEMENA JENNEY.[2] She was born at Union Springs, Cayuga County, New York, between 1800 and 1810[3] and died probably some time after the birth of their child in 1832 and before her husband remarried in 1849. Isaac married as his second wife ASENATH P. (MAYHEW) CLIFFORD,[4] who was born at Chilmark, Dukes County, on 3 June 1815, child of David and Martha Mayhew, and died at Tisbury on 6 January 1864.[5] Asenath had married as her first husband THOMAS CLIFFORD[6] who drowned at sea on passage to New York in 1840.[7] Isaac married as his third wife at Tisbury on 11 December 1865 SARAH D. (LUCE) FERGUSON,[8] who was born at Tisbury on 18 November 1803, a child of Stephen and Rebecca Luce, and died at Tisbury on 22 July 1878.[9] Sarah had previously married at Tisbury on 16 May 1824 JOHN FERGUSON,[10] who died at Chilmark on 30 January 1861.[11]

Isaac and Clemena were both of New Bedford when they married in 1822; Isaac was reported at Dartmouth, Bristol County, in the 1830 Census. However their daughter was born where her mother had been born, at Union Springs in 1832. Isaac Maxfield married at Tisbury, on Martha's Vineyard, in 1849, and remained there for the remainder of his life. Every record refers to Isaac as a mason, or brick and stone mason.

Isaac was reported in the 1830 Census at Dartmouth, Bristol County: one male and one female ages 20-29.[12]

Isaac married widow Asenath Clifford in 1849. He was 45; she 33. They were reported in the 1850 Census at Tisbury as follows:[13]

The 1855 Massachusetts census reported Isaac Maxfield, 52, mason, Asenath P. Maxfield, 40, and Ann T. Clifford, 15, together at Tisbury.[14]

The 1860 Census also reported them at Tisbury:[15]

Asenath Maxfield died at Tisbury in 1864, age 48. Almost two years later Isaac married widow Sarah Ferguson. They were both 62 years old. She had been widowed four years.

In 1865, Isaac Maxfield, 62, mason was living at Tisbury. His household included his son-in-law, John G. Chase, 42, carpenter, his daughter, Ann M. Chase, housewife, and his granddaughter, Alice G. Chase, 8.[16]

Sarah Maxfield died at Tisbury twelve years after their marriage, from heart failure.[18] Isaac Maxfield appeared in the 1880 Census with his daughter and son-in-law in Cottage City (now Oak Bluffs), Dukes County, also on Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts:[19]
