William H. Maxfield, the first of seven children, grew up in Whitehall, which is situated at the southern tip of Lake Champlain. The Champlain Canal, connecting that lake to the Hudson River, was completed in 1823, providing employment for the community. William was described as a "boatman" in census records for 1855, 1860, 1865, 1875, and 1880. He was called a "cartman" in 1870.
The 1855 New York state census reported William Maxfield, 18, living at home, working as a boatman.[4] In 1860, age, 22, still living at home, his occupation, like his father, was "boating."[5]
In 1865 William and Mary Maxfield were living with her mother, widow Olive Story, at Whitehall. Olive suffered from dementia, caused by fits. William was serving in the Union Army in the Civil War. He served in the 22d New York infantry regiment, and had transferred to the 117th Pennsylvania regiment. The family included a three month old child, John.[6]
William and Mary Maxfield appeared in the 1870 Census at Whitehall. William, age 34, was called a "cartman" with a personal estate of $200, born in New York. Mary, age 25, was born in England, and her parents were foreign born. Children John and Eva were ages 5 and 2 respectively.[7]
In 1875 the family consisted of William, 38, boatman, Mary A., 28, John W., 11. Eva B., 8, Ariebell, 6, Ira B., 4, and Adeline, six months. William and all of the children were born in Washington County.[8]
The family of William and Mary Maxfield had grown by 1880, when they appeared in the census, only three household after his parents, at Whitehall as follows:[9]

Son Ira Henry Maxfield was reported in 1910 at Brandon, Rutland County, where he owned and operatied a barber shop. Ira and Maude had three children, Reba V., 9, Elga N., 4, and Lila N. sixteen months.[11] In 1920 Ira and Maud were at the same location, still barbering, with daughters Reba, 19, Elga, 14, Lila, 10, and Ruth, 4. Elga was born in Idaho, indicating that the family probably lived in Idaho for a short time around 1905.[12] That 1920 Census also reported Mary A. Maxfield, 37, divorced, living at Poultney, Rutland County, and working as a shirt maker in a shirt factory.[13] Later that year she married Edward Conway, a mason. The 1930 Census reported residence and occupation the same. Of the daughters, only Lila, 21, and Ruth, 14, remained at home.[14] Reba and Elga had moved to 545 West Eleventh Street, New York City; Reba worked as a teacher at Leonia, Bergen County, New Jersey, and Elga did clerical work for an electric company.[15] Reba married in 1932, Elga in 1933. Eva (Maxfield) Jeremy died in 1938. By 1940 the nest had emptied, Ira, 68, continued to operate his barber shop; Maude was 59. That census reported that Ira had completed 6th grade and Maude had completed three years of High School.[16] Maude died in 1946. In 1950 Ira was living with his daughter, Elga Winans at Greenwich, Fairfield County, Connecticut:[17]

Lila Maxfield had moved to New York City by 1935, and in 1940 was reported living in Bronx County, New York, age 31, tabulator at a bank. With her was her sister Ruth, 24, working as a dental hygenist. Both girls had completed four years of college.[18]
Robert Henry Maxfield was reported in 1910, age 27, living in a hotel at Glens Falls, Warren County, New York, where he worked as an ironer in a shirt factory.[19] When he registered for the draft, 12 September 1918, he was working as a clerk and was short, stout, with gray eyes and brown hair.[20] Married in 1919, Robert and his wife Clara were reported in the 1920 Census boarding in a home at Glens Falls. They were both 36 years old and Robert was an ironer in a shirt factory.[21] In 1930 they owned their own home in Glens Falls, but his occupation remained the same.[22] In 1940 the couple, still childless, continued at Glens Falls, and Robert worked as a gardner for a private house.[23] In 1950, still at Glens Falls, both 66 yers old, Robert worked as janitor for a bank.[24]
William H. Maxfield and his wife Mary Story had the following children:
