Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Sixth Generation

GEORGE O.6 MAXFIELD (Mitchell5, Joshua4-3, Joseph2, John1) was born at Washington County, New York on April 1850, a child of Mitchell and Hannah M. Maxfield.[1] He died at Fort Ann, Washington County, on 12 April 1912.[2] He married first at Lake George, Washington County, on 4 August 1878 FANNY J. STEVENS,[3] who was born about 1852-3[4] and died at Fort Ann on 23 August 1879.[5] George married second at Fort Ann on 4 July 1881 EMMA AYLIFFE.[6] who was born in the United States about 1860-1[7] and died at Fort Ann on 19 August 1896.[8]

The fourth of seven children, George O. Maxfield grew up and lived his whole life at Fort Ann. The coming of the Champlain Canal in 1823 brought prosperity to Fort Ann, however it reamined a small town with a population in 1870 of 639.

The 1870 Census reported George Maxfield, 20, laborer, living in the home of his parents.[9] According to the 1875 New York state census, George was still living at home, age 24, and working as a carpenter.[10]

George Maxfield married Fanny Stevens in 1878, however the marriage lasted only one year. Fanny gave birth to a child in July or August of 1879, and died on 23 August; the child died in September. The deaths of mother and son were probably brought on by a difficult birth. However, her death was caused by typhoid fever.[11] The 1880 Census reported George Maxfield, 36[?], carpenter, again living with his parents.[12]

Two years after the death of his first wife, George married Emma Ayliffe. He was 31, she 21. This marriage produced five children in their 36 years of marriage before her death in 1896. At her death, the children were ages 14, 11, 8, 7, and 3. George was evidently not prepared to raise five children on his own. The 1900 Census reported George O. Maxfield, carpenter, 50, at Fort Ann, with only two children, Charles, 14, and Erma [Emma], 11.[13] His eldest child, George, 17, lived at Hartford, Washington County, in the household of Henry and Julia Walker, where he worked as a farm laborer.[14] The youngest two children, Bertha, 10, and Flora, 7, were inmates of the Albany Orphan Asylum, Albany, Albany County, New York.[15]

I have not found George O. Maxfield in the 1910 Census. Identifying records of this George is complicated by the fact that there were other George Maxfields, of approximately the same age, in the same area. I may have been mistaken in attributing some records to the wrong George. This George is probably the George Maxfield who died at Fort Ann in 1912. Son George married about 1907-8 and in 1910 was counted at Troy, Rensselaer County, New York, with his wife and one child.[16] Son Charles Maxfield in 1910 was boarding in a home at Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts, and was working as a brakeman on the railroad.[17] He married in 1912. I have not found the three daughters in the 1910 Census.

George O. Maxfield and his first wife Fanny Stevens had the following child:

  1. GEORGE7 MAXFIELD b. at New York about July-August 1879, d. there on Spetember 1879.[18]

George O. Maxfield and his second wife Emma Ayliffe had the following children:

  1. GEORGE HENRY7 MAXFIELD b. at Fort Ann on 30 July 1882
  2. CHARLES WILLIAM7 MAXFIELD b. at Troy on 30 November 1884
  3. EMMA F.7 MAXFIELD b. at Fort Ann on 20 August 1887,[19] d. at Saint Johnsville, Montgomery County, New York, on September 1972;[20] m. CLYDE J. PIZER b. at Little Falls, Herkimer County, New York, on 6 October 1901, d. there on 9 October 1967.[21]
  4. BERTHA M.7 MAXFIELD b. at Fort Ann on 3 August 1889.[22]
  5. FLORENCE E.7 MAXFIELD b. at Fort Ann on 27 October 1892,[23] d. at Pittsfield, Berkshire County, Massachusetts, on 16 October 1918;[24] m. at Sharon, Litchfield County, Connecticut, on 16 August 1916 LESTER E. FRANHAM.[25]
