CLARENCE EMORY6 MAXFIELD (Oliver5, Joshua4-3, Joseph2, John1) was born at Fort Ann, Washington County, New York on 20 July 1857, a child of Oliver and Mary Maxfield. he died at Ypsilanti, Washtenaw County, Michigan, on 7 February 1940.[1] He married first DELLA E. STEWART, child of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Stewart, who was born on 11 April 1856 and died at Watertown, Jefferson County, New York, on 17 August 1890.[2] Clarence married second, at Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan, on 30 December 1896 EMMA CAROLINE BLENMAN,[3] who was born at Detroit on July 1864[5] and died on 1955.[5]
Clarence grew up in Fort Ann, the fourth of four children. The 1875 New York state census reported him with his parents and two siblings at Fort Ann. Clarence, 18, born at Washington County, worked as a farm hand. As his father was a boatman,[6] Clarence must have been a hand on someone else's farm. The 1880 Census reported him with his parents, still single, 22, but under occupation he was called "student, school."[7] He was probably pursuing higher education to qualify himself for the ministry.
The next refereence I find to this Clarence Maxfield is an obituary in the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle, 23 August 23 1890:[8]

This brief article reveals important information about Clarence. First it identifies his first wife. Second, it indicates that he was working as a minister. Third, it locates him at Watertown. Sometime in the interval between 1880 and 1890 he had been ordained into the ministy and married.
At the time of Clarence's second marriage, 1896, he was living at Detroit, still a clergyman.[9] In November 1899 he accepted a call to the First Baptist Church of Benton Harbor, Berrien County, Michigan.[10]
Clarence Maxfield appeared in the 1900 Census as "Claud" at 101 Broadway, Benton Harbor, Berrien County, Michigan:[11]

He was described as a "clergyman, Baptist Church." Louise Blennian was still with them.[14] According to that census, Helen A. Maxfield, 35, resided at the Missionary House, 8151 LaSalle Gardens North, occupation: missionary.[15]
Clarence Maxfield died in February, 1940. The census in April of that year reported Emma Maxfield, 75, and her sister, Louise Blenman, 77, living at 16538 Ward Avenue, Detroit.[16] Helen Maxfield, 45, single, was reported head of a household at 95 Monterey Street, Highland Park, Wayne County. The household consisted of eleven persons, all missionaries. Helen had completed two years of college.[17]
In 1950 Helen Maxfield continued to live at Highland Park. The location was described as Missionary Workers Junior Bible School; she was "superintendent, home missionary." The household included her mother, Emma C. Maxfield, 85, plus eleven lodgers.[18] Emma died in 1955, Helen in 1985.
Clarence Maxfield and his second wife adopted the following child:
Suggestion for further research: As Clarence was a Baptist minister, and Helen was a home missionary, American Baptist archives must have further information on them.
