RUSSELL TUBBS6 MAXFIELD (O. Page5, Currier4, Joshua3, Joseph2, John1) was born at Goshen, Sullivan County, New Hampshire, on 15 November 1836, a son of O. Page Maxfield and his wife Abigail Cutts. He died at Newport, Sullivan County, on 21 August 1914.[1] He married first at Bradford, Merrimack County, New Hampshire, on 26 August 1862 MELVINA A. COMSTOCK.[2] She was born at Stanstead, Stanstead County, Quebec, on 1838, a daughter of Harry and Helen M. Comstock.[3] She died on 9 April 1875.[4] He married second at Newport, Orleans County, Vermont, on 14 February 1877 ADELLA FRANCES COLBY.[5] She was born at Stanstead on 1861, a daughter of Franklin Colby and Betsey Messer.[6] They divorced at Sullivan County on 7 November 1898.[7] Adella married second at Newport, New Hampshire, on 1 May 1901 RUFUS L. DUDLEY, who was born at Newport, New Hampshire, about 1840-1, a child of Ahiza Dudley and Lucinda Clark.[8]
Russell Maxfield grew up on a farm in Goshen, the third of seven children. The 1860 Census reported him twenty-three years old, living with his parents at Goshen.[9]
Russell and Melvina married in 1862. They had three children; to the best of my knowledge none of them survived to adulthood. Melvina died at the age of thirty-seven, after thirteen years of marriage.
Two years after the death of his first wife, Russell married Adella. He was 40, she 16. They had one child, who died in childbirth. The 1880 Census reported Russell Maxfield, 42, farmer, and Adell Maxfield, 22, at Goshen.[10]
Russell Maxfield was granted a divorce from Adella in Sullivan County court on 7 November 1898, for "willing absence."[11] Two and a half years later Adella remarried.
The 1900 Census reported Russell Maxfield, 62, widower, farmer, at Goshen. Also at his residence was Stella F. Smith, 30, housekeeper.[12] In 1910 he had moved into Newport, New Hampshire, living alone, and was doing odd jobs.[13]
Russell Maxfield wrote his will on 3 April 1914. He gave to Harold Wiggins his watch and chain. He directed that the remainder of his estate be divided equally between his niece Frances E. Sargent and his nephew Lister P. Emery, both of Newport.[14] Frances could possibly be the daughter of his cousin Ella (daughter of his brother Nathan). Lister could possibly be the son of his sister Edith. Russell died on 21 August 1914 from cancer of the liver.[15]
