ALMON6 MAXFIELD (Jonathan5, Currier4, Joshua3, Joseph2, John1) was born at Goshen, Sullivan County, New Hampshire, on 5 November 1829 (NMGR 7:70), a child of Jonathan Carr Maxfield and his first wife Judith Cheney. He died at Plover, Portage County, Wisconsin, on 14 December 1912. He married at Plover on 20 June 1861 MARY ELIZABETH RICE, who born at Stockholm, Saint Lawrence County, New York, on 20 August 1842,[1] and died at Plover on 8 March 1916.[2]
The eldest of five children, three of whom lived to adulthood, Almon grew up on a farm in New Hampshire, but at about age fifteen moved west with his family, eventually settling in Plover. The 1850 census reported Almon twice: as a 20 year old farmer in the household of Hiram Griffith in Unoin town, Rock County, Wisconsin,[3] and with his father in the same town.[4] The 1860 census reported Almon Maxfield, 30, farmer, living in the household of his sister and brother-in-law, Electa and Jacob Harbaugh, at Plover.[5]
Almon and Mary Elizabeth married in 1861. He was 31, she 18. The 1870 Census reported Almond Maxfield, 40, farmer, his wife Elizabeth, 38, and daughter Irena, 1, at Plover. With them was his nephew, Henry Harbaugh, 14, farm laborer.[6] The census taker over-estimated Elizabeth's age by a decade.
The Almon Maxfield family was reported in the 1880 Census at Plover as follows:[7]

Although their last child, Julien, was born two and a half months before the census, he was not reported.
The 1895 Wisconsin state census reported the family of A. Maxfield at Plover, consisting of two males and two females.[8] The males would probably have been Almon and son Julien. One of the females would have been wife Mary Elizabeth. Daughter Irene had married in 1890. The other female in the household would probably have been Cora or Marion Elizabeth, and one of those two must have been living elsewhere.
The 1900 Census reported this family in the village of Plover as follows:[9]

This record further stated that Almon and Mary had been married for 39 years, and Mary had ten children, four of whom were living. I only have information on five children, so there may have been five other children born, who did not live. Cora, who married in 1899, was living at Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota, with her husband Charles R. Whitchurch, a fireman. Julian F. Maxfield, 20, was with them and working as a bookkeeper.[10]
The 1910 Census reported Almon Maxfield, 80 and his wife Mary E., 67, at Plover. This record called Almon a retired farmer, and stated that Mary had given birth to six children, four of whom were living.[11] Son Julien had married in 1905. The marriage record described him as a civil engineer.[12] He was reported by the census taker in 1910 as "J. F. Maxfield," 30, resident at Minneapolis with his wife Genie E., 29. He was a civil engineer engaged in field work; she had given borth to one child, who had not survived.[13]
Almon Maxfield's death, in 1912, was reported in the Gazette of Stevens Point, Portage County:[14]
Almond Maxfield, who had been a resident of the town and village of Plover for over 60 years, passed away at his home in that village at 10:45 o'clock last Saturday forenoon. He had been in poor health all summer, being under the care of his physician since early Fall and was confined to the house about two months. Mr. Maxfield was a native of New Hampshire, born Nov. 5, 1829, and was therefore 83 years of age. He came west in 1840 with his parents, locating at Janesville, and thence to Plover in 1850, living on a farm near the Morrill school house until about 25 years ago, when he moved to the village and operated a general store for a number of years. He was married to Miss Elizabeth Rice 51 years ago last June, and by whom he is survived, together with four children, Mrs. Wm. Dake of this city, Mrs. Chas. Whitchurch of Minneapolis, Mrs. Wilmot Pierce of Stanley and Julian Maxfield of Plover, besides one sister, Mrs. John Patterson of Plover. The funeral took place Monday afternoon at 2:30, Rev. Kendall of Buena Vista officiating, with interment in Plover cemetery. All the children, with their wives or husbands were present. . . . Mrs. Maxfield will go to Stanley to spend the winter with her daughter, Mrs. Pierce. |
Widow Mary Elizabeth (Rice) Maxfield died in 1916.
Julien Frank Maxfield, son of Almon and Mary Elizabeth, signed up for the draft on 12 September 1918. At the time he resided at Plover and described himself as a surveyor. He was tall, slender, with blue eyes and light hair.[15]
Julien and Jennie were reported in census records at Plover from 1920 through 1950.[16] The 1920 Census reported Julian a civil engineer with his own practice. The household included their son, Jack H., age four years and six months. The couple had at least two children before Jack, both of whom died at childbirth. The 1930 Census called Julien a sawyer. In 1940 he was described as a "Professional, civil engineer."
Julien and Jennie's son John, alwats called "Jack," had married in 1937 and was reported in the 1940 Census with his inlaws at Whitehall, Trempealeau County, Wisconsin:[17]

Jack was employed by the government.
In 1950 Julian, 70, and Jennie, 69, were at Plover; Julian no longer had employment. That census reported Jack H. Maxfield, 34, and wife Barbara, 32, at Madison, Dane County, Wisconsin, where Jack worked as a civil engineer for the municipality. The family inclided children Jack M., 12, born Wisconsin, Fredric C., 9, born Iowa, and Mary F., 1, born Illinois.[18] So this family must have moved around in the previous decade.
Jennie died in 1955, Julien in 1959.
