of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Sixth Generation

JOEL SANDERS6 MAXFIELD (Russell5, Currier4, Joshua3, Joseph2, John1) was born at Goshen, Sullivan County, New Hampshire, on 12 November 1847, a child of Russell Tubbs Maxfield and his wife Mary E. Cutts.[1] He died at Concord, Merrimack County, New Hampshire, on 28 February 1921.[2] He married at Newbury, Merrimack County, on 9 July 1867 ROSILL A. GOVE, child of James Gove and Lura McKelliss.[3] She was born at Weare, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, on 13 April 1847, and died at Newport, Sullivan County, on 21 March 1920.[4]

Joel grew up on his parents' farm in Goshen, the fifth of eleven children. The 1860 Census reported him there, age 12, attending school.[5] Joel was 20, Rosill 21, when they married in 1867.

The Joel Maxfield family was reported in the 1870 Census at Mill Village Post Office, Goshen Town. Joel S. Maxfield, age 22, was a farm laborer, Rosilla A. Maxfield, age 24. was keeping house, and Gertrude A. Maxfield, age 2, was at home.[6] They were surrounded by farms of Maxfield families.

In 1880 the family appeared in the census at Goshen as follows:[7]

The 1900 Census found Joel and Rosilla at Goshen. According to that record, Joel was born at New Hampshire in November 1847, his parents born in New Hampshire and Vermont, he was a farmer. Rosella was born in New Hampshire in April 1846, her parents were born in New Hampshire and Vermont, she had two children, both still living.[8] The children were not at home. Lena had married in 1893, and in 1900 lived at Newport with her husband, George W. Fuller, clerk in a hardware store. Their first child Harold was five years old. With them was her sister Gertrude Maxfield, 32, described as a "dress gatherer."[9]

The 1910 census reported Joel S. Maxfield, 62, and his wife Rosill E. Maxfield, 64, at Goshen. Joel was a dairy farmer.[10] The George Fuller family continued to live at Newport, consisting of George, 46, laborer in a hardware store, Lena, 38, Harald M., 15, and Louise, 8, also Gertrude Maxfield, 42, stitcher in an underware factory.[11]

At the time of the 1920 Census Joel and Rosille Maxfield were living with their daughter Lena and her husband George Fuller, at 96 Laurel Street, Newport, New Hampshire. Their daughter, Gertrude Maxfield, and grandchild Louise Fuller were also in the household. Joel and Rosille, age 73, had no occupation. Son-in-law George W. Fuller, age 50, born in Rhode Island, was a salesman for a hardware store. Daughter Lena C. Fuller, age 47, had no occupation, but granddaughter Louise Fuller, age 17, was a saleslady in a drug store. Daughter Gertrude A. Maxfield, age 51 and single, was a stitcher for Purity underwear.[12]

Rosill (Gove) Maxfield died in 1920 from pneumonia.[13] On 12 May of that year Lena C. Fuller was appointed by the court to be the guardian of her father, Joel S. Maxfield, who was decreed to be insane.[14] He died about nine months later at the New Hampshire State Hospital from chronic myocarditis.[15] Gertrude died in 1922, age 54, from organic heart lesion.[16] George Fuller died in 1924, Lena in 1932.
