EDWIN FRANCIS6 MAXFIELD (Russell5, Currier4, Joshua3, Joseph2, John1) was born at Goshen, Sullivan County, New Hampshire, on 25 June 1852. a child of Russell Tubbs Maxfield and his wife Mary E. Cutts.[1] He died at Sunapee, Sullivan County, on 12 July 1919.[2] He married at Viola, Wabasha County, Minnesota, on 3 March 1880 MARY BENTLEY, a child of Andrew Bentley,[3] who was born at Springvale, Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin, on 23 February 1860 and died at Newbury, Merrimack County, New Hampshire, on 28 May 1923.[4]
Edwin grew up on the family farm in Goshen, the seventh of eleven children. The 1870 Census reported him at Goshen, 18, farm laborer, with his parents and six siblings.[5]
At some point in the 1870s Edwin Maxfield moved to Minnesota, where he married Mary Bentley in March of 1880. The marriage record stated they were both residents of Olmsted County, Minnesota.[6] However the census on 1 June of that year reported them at Rosewood, Chippewa County, Minnesota. That record reeported E. F. Maxfield, 27, farmer, and Mary Maxfield, 27, keeping house. With them was Frank Bentley, 22, boarder and farmer, probably a relation of Mary.[7]
Between the 1880 and 1900 censuses, Edwin and Mary had eight children, and they had a ninth in 1901. However two daughters died in July of 1895 from diphtheria[8] and the child born in 1900 was a stillbirth. The place of birth reported in birth records indicated that the family moved around. They were in Stoneham, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, in 1881, back in Goshen in 1888, in Newbury in 1890 and 1891, and at Sunapee from 1893 through 1901. Birth and death records of the children reported Edwin Maxfield a farmer in 1888, 1893, 1895, and 1896. a section hand/man in 1890, 1897, 1900 and 1901, and a laborer in 1891.[9]
The 1900 Census reported the family in Sunapee, New Hampshire, as follows:[10]

Edwin and Mary had been married 30 years; she had nine children, six of whom were living. Claude and his wife Irene had moved to Rotterdam, Schenectady County, New York, where he was a laborer.[12] Florence and her husband Leonard Rowe lived at Newport on the dairy farm of his parents, George and Abbie Rowe.[13] Some time in this decade Claude received a law degree from Dartmouth College, at Hanover, Grafton County, New Hampshire.[14]
The sons of Edwin and Mary reported for the draft in World War I. Claude Bently Maxfield reported at Milford, New Haven County, Connecticut, on 12 September 1918. He lived at 36 Wallace Street, West Haven, New Haven County, and worked as a lawyer for Arvine, Beers & Woodruff, at 42 Church Street, New Haven, New Haven County. He was described as medium height, medium build, gray eyes, with brown hair. Frederick Leslie Maxfield reported for the draft at Shelton, Fairfield County, Connecticut, on 5 June 1917. He worked as a stationary engineer for Adams Manufacturing Company. He had previous military experience of three years in the New Hampshire National Guard, as a private in the infantry. He was described as tall, medium build, blue eyes, with brown hair. The first joint of his right index finger was missing[15] Percy Maxfield served in the military during that War.
Edwin Maxfield died in 1919 from apoplexy.[16] Son Frederick and daughter Helen both married in 1916. Helen died three months later from acute tubercular enteritis.[17] The 1920 Census reported widow Mary Maxfield and her two youngest children living with her brother-in-law Elmer Maxfield, farmer, at Sunapee. Son Percy, 22, was working on the farm.[18] Claude Maxfield, 38, and his wife Irene, 31, were reported at West Haven where Claude was a lawyer.[19] Florence and her husband George Rowe continued to live on his parents' farm; they now had five children.[20] I have not found Frederick in this census. Widow Mary (Bentley) Maxfield died in 1923 from neuritis of the throat.[21]
Claude Bentley7 Maxfield and his wife Irene continued to live at West Haven, and Claude practiced law with his own firm. He reported for the "old men's" draft at New Haven County on 27 April 1942. Thy had no children. Claude died in 1952. A year later widow Irene Maxfield married Harry George Ellis. He only lived another year, and she died two years after his death.[22]
Frederick Leslie7 Maxfield and his wife Jane lived at Newbury where he worked as a mechanic at an automobile garage, which he eventually owned. When he registered for the "old men's" draft on 27 April 1942 he was working for Fellows Gear Shaper at Springfield, Windsor County, Vermont. In 1950 they lived at Sunapee; Fred was unemployed; Jane was bookkeeper for a soft drink factory. They had two children.[23]
Fred Edwin8 Maxfield (Frederick7, Edwin6) enlisted in the Army on 23 September 1940 and served in the Coast Artillery Corps of the Army Mine Planter Service. According to his enlistmanet record Fred had a grammar school education and had worked as a chauffeur and driver of bus, taxi, truck and tractor. He married in 1949. The 1950 Census reeported them at Newport: Fred was an auto mechanic at a garage; wife Marie was bookkeeper for a variety store.[24] His obituary from the Manchester Union leader follows:[25]
NEW BOSTON -- Fred Edwin Maxfield, 89, died Jan. 14, 2010, after a long illness. He was born Sept. 11, 1920, in Orange, Conn., to Fred L. Maxfield and Jane C. O'Donnell. He was raised and educated in Newbury, and worked at the family-owned business, Maxfield's Garage, which was located at the current Mount Sunapee traffic circle. This experience would serve him well in his career as a machinist, as well as a lifetime of tinkering and home repair. Living at the base of Mt. Sunapee allowed him to begin skiing at a very young age. He often told the story to his grandchildren how he and his friends would hike up to the top of the mountain with their skis in the early morning, take one long run down the mountain, hike up once more, and ski home to arrive in time for dinner. IN HIS LIFE: In 1940, Fred enlisted in the U.S. Army and aided the World War II effort from 1940 to 1945 where he was stationed in England, and stateside at Boston Harbor. After returning to Mount Sunapee, he met Marie Leary from Melrose, Mass., who traveled on the train from Boston to visit the Sunapee summer resort area. They were married in June 18, 1949 in Melrose. In 1951 Fred and Marie moved to Guild, where they made their home, raised three children and became part of the original "Guild Gang." Fred worked at area garages as a mechanic and was employed by both Newport and Newbury police departments. In 1950, he was hired as a machinist at Jones and Lamson Machine Tool in Springfield, Vt. Here, Fred's mechanical skills and sense of precision were put to good use, and he found the career he would remain in for 32 years. Fred retired in 1982 from Jones and Lamson and left New Hampshire to begin a life in Florida with his wife Marie. Marie died in 1988 and Fred returned to Guild for a time. Fred moved back to Florida in 1992. Florida life included walking his dog, Lucy, enjoying the company of neighbors, being part of the neighborhood watch group, and helping those in need. After living in Florida for 15 years, he returned to New Hampshire in 2007 and moved to New Boston, with his daughter, Ann, until his passing in 2010. Fred was a past member of The American Legion, the VFW, a parishioner of St Patrick and St. Joachim Parish, and helped coach Newport Little Leaguers. Fred was a spirited man who enjoyed taking things apart, woodworking, old clocks, jigsaw puzzles, speeding on his scooter and teasing his grandchildren whenever possible. Family includes three children, Mary Maxfield Casimer and her husband, Leonard Casimer, of Gameliel, Ark., Ann E. Maxfield of New Boston and Fred T. Maxfield and his wife, Mary, of Newport. Grandchildren include Tracy Sterk of Leadville, Colo., Vincent Jones of Florida, Leonard Casimer Jr. of Florida and Ethan Maxfield of Newport. Also two great-grandchildren, Viola and Leo Sterk. He was predeceased by his wife, Marie, by a sister, Janet Maxfield Leland, and grandsons Christopher Casimer of Dunedin, Fla. and Jacob M. Maxfield of Newport. . . . |
Guild is a village in the town of Newport.
Percy R.7 Maxfield married in 1922 and was reported in the 1930 Census at Newport with his wife and daughter, where he worked as truck driver for a bakery. His wife Marion sued for divorce in 1931 claiming his habitual drunkenness; he did not contest. Six months after the divorce Marion remarried. Percy was living at Whitefield, Lincoln County, Maine, in 1935. He married for the second time in 1939 to Ada (Calkins) Brown, a cook. In 1940 he was a lodger at Windsor working as a machinist in cones machine shop. Later that year Ada's suit for divorce was granted, uncontested, on grounds of extreme cruelty.[26] Dean Mullavey reported the following family tradition:
"The date of his death is unknown, but it is known that he died in New York City...he was homeless and had been an alcoholic just up to and after his divorce. There is a story extant that Julius Pultar and he were very good friends...they liked to drink together...that Julius had designs on Percy's wife...that Julius helped Percy to become an alcoholic and eventually lose his wife...that's what I heard. I heard, too, that Percy was a very nice person..."[27]We do know that he died on 3 March 1957. According to French he was a shoecutter.[28]
Jacob Martin10 Maxfield (Fred9-8, Frederick7, Edwin3) died at the age of 21. His obituary was carried in the Foster's Daily Democrat:[29]
NEWPORT ; Jacob Martin Maxfield, 21, of Oak Street, died Sunday, Aug. 10, 2008, in Lempster, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Jacob was born in Claremont on Sept. 11, 1986, the son of Fred Thomas and Mary (Martin) Maxfield of Newport. He was raised and educated in Newport. He graduated from Newport High School in 2004 and proceeded to Endicott College in Beverly, Mass., where he received his bachelor of liberal arts in American studies. Jake was a lover of life. He enjoyed playing football, baseball and basketball, but football was his passion, playing four years at Newport High School and another four years playing tight end at Endicott College. Jake grew up skiing and snowboarding at Mount Sunapee and hiking Mt. Kearsarge. Jake enjoyed watching, analyzing and quoting all kinds of movies, and loved listening to all genres of music. He loved everything from Frank Sinatra and Louis Armstrong to country and classic rock. He was inspired by the movie "Rocky" at a very young age, and in turn had a true passion for the underdog in life. He wrote several papers about the conflict between black and white in society. His college senior thesis was about the inequalities among black and white professional football coaches, having been very moved and inspired by legendary football coach Tony Dungy. Jake also enjoyed spending time with his friends and family, traveling across the country and to Mexico. He had many, many friends and family who loved him, and he will be deeply missed. Survivors, in addition to his parents, include brother, Ethan of Newport; his maternal grandmother, Phyllis Karpinski Martin of Newport; his paternal grandfather, Fred E. Maxfield of New Boston; his aunts and uncles, Carole Martin and Jack Creedon of Charlotte, N.C., Debora Martin and Steve Delane of Kittery, Maine, Judith Martin and Robert Biggert of Westborough, Mass., James Martin of Newport, Donald and Susan Martin of Grantham, Kristin and Mark Kloza of Salem, Amy and Kenny Currier of Newport, Mary and Loenard Casimer of Arkansas, Ann Maxfield of New Boston and numerous cousins. He was predeceased by his grandfather, George "Jim" Martin, and his grandmother, Marie Maxfield. . . . |
