Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Sixth Generation

EMZY6 MAXFIELD (perhaps Obadiah,5, David,4 Eliphalet,3 Nathaniel,2 John1) may have been born at Vermont about 1804-5,[1] possibly a son of Obadiah and Eunice Maxfield. He died at Richmond, Henrico County, Virginia, on 1 September 1863.[2] He married first at Tuscarawas County, Ohio, on 28 June 1831 ELIZABETH ANN MAUK.[3] Emzy married second at Tuscarawas County, on 20 October 1836 on ELIZABETH FERRELL.[4] Emzy married third at Coshoscton County, Ohio, on 24 December 1842 SUSAN CORDEY.[5] She was born at Pennsylvania about 1815.[6]

A complete discussion of the identity of Emzy Maxfield and the search for his parents will be found at WHO WERE THE PARENTS OF EMZY MAXFIELD (d. 1 Sept, 1863).

Perhaps raised in Vermont, Emzy Maxfield was in Tuscarawas County by the time of his marriage in 1831 and the birth of their child two weeks later. He purchased land in Coshocton County on 3 October 1835.[7]

Emzy Maxfield married for the second time at Tuscarawas County in 1836, Elizabeth Ferrell. On 10 April 1837 he received a patent on land in Coshocton County, the southwest quarter of northwest quarter of section 12, township 6 in range 4, Military District, 40 acres.[8]

The 1840 Census reported the family of Emzy Maxfield at Adams Township, Coshocton County, consisting of one male 30-39 (Emzy), one female 20-29 (probably Elizabeth), two males and two females aged 5-9 (Franklin, child by his first wife, age 9), and one male and one female under 5 (David, about 2).[9] Several children indicated in this census have not been identified.

On 11 November 1840 Emzy Maxfield lost land for non-payment of taxes.[10]

In 1842 at Coshocton County, Emzy married, for the third time, Susan Cordey. I have identified only one child of Emzy by his first wife, one by his second, and seven by this third wife.

The 1850 Census reported this family at Oxford, Tuscarawas County, as follows:[11]

Line Name Age Sex Occupation R.E. Birthplace Other
4. Amiza Maxfield 45 M carpenter unknown
5. Susan Maxfield 34 F PA

9. Sarah C. Maxfield 7 F OH
10. Lucinda J. Maxfield 4 F OH
11. Robert W. Maxfield 2 M OH
12. Amiza Maxfield 4/12 M OH

The "Cordery" boys could be children of Susan by a previous marriage or siblings of Susan.

The 1860 Census reported this family at Newcomerstown, Tuscarawas County, as follows:[12]

Emzy Maxfield fought in the Civil War, in Company G of the Ohio 112nd infantry regiment. He was captured, and died in a prisoner of war camp at Richmond, Virginia, in 1863.[13]

Son Franklin migrated to California in 1852 and was reported there in the 1870, 1880 and 1900 censuses. Sons James, Robert, Samuel and Henry had moved to Iowa, where James was reported in 1880, 1885 and 1895 censuses, and Robert was reported in 1870, and Samuel was reported in 1880, 1885, 1900 and 1910, and Henry was reported in 1910.[14]

Susan (Cordey) Maxfield, 64 year old widow, was reported at Hanover Township, Licking County, Ohio, in 1880, with her daughter Lucinda, 33, son-in-law, John Evans, 49, carpenter, and eight grandchildren.[15]

In 1885 Susan was living with her recently widowed son James Maxfield, at LaPorte, Black Hawk County, Iowa, and three grandchildren.[16]

Franklin Maxfield, son of Emzy Maxfield by his first wife Elizabeth Mauk, was an early pioneer of California. The article on him in A Memorial and Biographical History of the Coast Counties of Central California follows:[17]

Frank Maxfield - The time is not far distant when the early time gold hunters of California will all be numbered with the "great majority," and any record, however brief, will be perused with interest by the future students of history. The discovery of gold in California attracted a class of men which, taken collectively or individually, were unique. Of their successes or failures it is not the aim or scope of this work to treat, inasmuch as the miner's future is never, or seldom, determined by any established code of business regulations or principles, but rather upon their good luck in striking a lead and their ability to make a lucky guess as to its extent and value after it has been located.

Frank Maxfield, of Monterey, is one of the pioneer miners of California. He came to the gold fields of the state in 1852. He is a native of Ohio, born in Tusrarawas county, in the northern part of the state, July 15, 1831. There he received the rudiments of his education, and learned the potter's trade, which he pursued at that place till 1851. He then went to Indiana and followed the same business about one year.

Reports of the rich gold discoveries in California so fired his ambitious nature that he joined his uncle, Frank Mauk, Esq., who had visited the gold diggings in 1849, and proceeded with him on a journey overland to the Pacific coast. After remaining one winter in Iowa, they resumed their journey and arrived at Salt Lake in the month of July. Here they witnessed the laying of the corner-stone of the great Mormon temple, July 17, 1852. Owing to an old school-day acquaintance with Silas, a cousin of the late Mormon priest, John Smith, they were received at Salt Lake kindly, many privileges and courtesies being extended to therein, which was in striking contrast to the treatment received by the average overland emigrant. Having sent word in advance that the little party would arrive in the city at a stated time, they were met with carriages, their entire outfit taken in charge, cattle fed, oxen shod, wagons replenished with provisions, etc.; and when they left the city they were given passes over the numerous bridges and ferries which they would encounter on their westward journey. Mr. Maxfield met other acquaintances there who, while embracing and fully believing in the Mormon doctrine, did not believe in or practice polygamy.

They resumed and accomplished their journey without particular incident, reaching Diamond Spring, in El Dorado county, December 5, 1952. The uncle, Frank Mauk, Esq., located at San José, where he farmed for several years. He then engaged in there erection of quartz mills in Amador county and adjoining mining districts. He was an active and aggressive business man, pursuing this business up to the time of his death, which occurred in Arizona in 1889, at an advanced age, he having been born in 1809. Mrs. William Tibbetts of Monterey is a daughter of his.

Mr. Maxfield mined in El Dorado, Placer and adjoining counties up to about 1861, since which time he has lived in Sonoma and Monterey counties, in the last named since 1874. There are few pioneers who are not acquainted with his face and voice.

Franklin registered to vote at Anally, Sonoma County, on 7 March 1867, where he was a saloon keeper. The 1870 Census reported him there (Sebastopol Post Office), where he was described as a wood chopper. He registered to vote at Monterey County, California, on 7 November 1876 and 11 March 1882. The 1880 Census reported him at Castroville, Monterey County, a servant in the household of William Ford. The 1900 Census reported him in the County Hospital, at Alisal Township, Monterey County.[18]

Henry Allen Maxfield, last son of Emzy and Susan, lived in Iowa, most often with his brother Samuel of Samuel's son Robert. In 1900 Henry was at Vinton, Benton County, Iowa, 42, day laborer, with his brother Samuel. In 1910 he was reported in a boarding house in Vinton, 52, proprietor of a billiard hall. In 1920 he was living with Samuel; he was reported age 61, laborer in a bowling alley. In 1930 and 1940 he was living with his nephew (Samuel's son) Robert at Cedar Rapids, Linn County, Iowa.[19]

Emzy Maxfield and his first wife had the following child, perhaps others:

  1. FRANKLIN7 MAXFIELD b. at Tuscarawas County on 15 July 1831;[20] d. at Monterey County on 14 October 1906.[21]
