LUCIEN6 MAXFIELD (Jacob5, Eliphalet4-3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at New Hampshire on 1814[1] perhaps a son of Jacob Maxfield and his wife Ruth Griffin. He married first at Carmel, Penobscot County, Maine, on 25 March 1838 MARIA SPEARIN.[2] She was born at Maine about 1818-9,[3] and died at Guilford, Piscataquis County, Maine, on November 1859.[4] Lucien married second at Exeter, Penobscot County, on 8 February 1860 HARRIET (JOSLYN) HAYES.[5] She was born at Chesterville, Franklin County, Maine, on 29 August 1829, and died at Pittsfield, Somerset County, Maine, on 11 June 1913.[6] Harriet had previously married at Augusta, Kennebec County, on 25 July 1850 LORING D. HAYES.[7]
The parentage of Lucien Maxfield is not proven. Click the following link for a discussion of WHO WERE THE PARENTS OF LUCIEN MAXFIELD (B. NEW HAMPSHIRE ABT 1814-5)?.
Lucien Maxfield farmed in Maine throughout his adult life. However he did move a few times. He was at Carmel in the 1840 and 1850 censuses. In 1860, following his second marriage, he lived at Guilford. He was reported at Sangerville, Piscataquis County, in 1870, and at Pittsfield in 1880.
The 1840 Census reported this family at Carmel, consisting of a couple in their twenties (Lucien 26, Maria 22) and a male under 5 (Henry 3).[8]
In 1850 they were living in the household of William Spearin, perhaps Maria's father:[9]

Maria died from consumption in 1859,[10] leaving Lucien with children ages 19, 17, 7, and 4. Three months later Lucien married Harriet (Joslyn) Hayes. He was 46, she 30. The 1860 Census reported them at Guilford, the family consisting of Lucien, 45, farmer, Harriet, 39, Henry, 22, Fannie, 18, Harriet, 8, and Franklin, 6.[11] Henry Maxfield was also reported at Benton, Kennebec County, as "H. W. Micksfield," 22, millman, in the household of David and Betsy Hanson.[12]
The 1870 Census reported Lucian farming at Sangerville. The family consisted of Lucian, 56, Harriet, 40, Frank, 15, Edith, 9, and Charles, 6.[13] Frank was the only child from Lucien's first marriage still present in the home. Henry, who had married in 1861, lived at Benton with his wife and child.[14] Annette died in 1863. I have not found the other children in this census.
In 1880 their family was at Pittsfield:[15]

Samuel F. is the same person called Franklin and Frank in earlier censuses. Henry was at Fairfield, Somerset County, with his wife and children, where he was described as an unemployed teamster.[16]
Some time between the 1880 and 1900 censuses Lucien Maxfield died. In 1900 the family, now headed by Charles, was actively engaged in the woolen weaving industry.[17]
