JEWETT EDWARD7 MAXFIELD (Jewett6, James5, John4, Michael4, John2-1) was born at Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts, on 21 Februry 1832, a son of Jewett Maxfield and his first wife Electa Smith.[1] He died at Gilford, Belknap County, New Hampshire, on 22 August 1910.[2] He married (intentions published at Gilmanton, Belknap County, on 12 March 1857) LYDIA ANNA PIPER.[3] She was born at Gilmanton on 18 November 1839, a daughter of Nathan and Sarah (Russell) Piper. She died at Belmont, Belknap County, on 16 November 1922.[4]
Jewett Edward Maxfield was born at Salem, the second of two children of Jewett and Electa Maxfield. I have no information on his older sister beyond 1836. When young Jewett was fifteen months old his mother died. When he was age 3 his father remarried. When he was age 4 his father died in a tragic workplace accident.
It is not clear in whose household young Jewett was raised following his father's death. The 1850 Census reported him living at Salem with his uncle James Maxfield, aunt Emily, and their two children. That census reported young Jewett, 18, a shoemaker, and his uncle James a tanner.[5]
Jewett E. Maxfield married Lydia Piper at Upper Gilmanton Parish in 1857; He was twenty-five, she seventeen. That same year, property owned in common by Jewett and Lydia Maxfield on the one hand, and Sarah and Elisha Piper on the other hand, was partitioned so each couple owned property in their own right.[6] The 1860 Census reported Jewett Maxfield, 28, farmer, Lydia, 20, and Sarah E, Maxfield, 2, at Gilmanton (Upper Gilmanton Post office).[7]
The 1870 Census reported this family at Belmont. This does not necessarily indicate they moved, as Upper Gilmanton was incorporated as the town of Belmont in 1869. The family consisted of Jewett, 38, carpenter, Lydia, 31, keeping house, Sarah, 12, and Clara, 9.[8]
Sarah married John Small in 1878; the 1880 Census reportd them at Canterbury, Merrimack County, New Hampshire; John, 26, was farming, Sarah, 22, was keeping house.[9] Meanwhile, after an interval of eleven years with no new children, the family of Lydia and Jewett was growing again. The 1880 Census reported at Belmont Jewett Maxfield, 48, farmer, Lydia, 40, Clara, 19 school teacher, Julia, 8, Ida, 4, and Nellie, 1.[10]
According to the Independent Statesman, Jewett and Lydia had a son born 4 December 1881.[11] According to daughter Maude's death record, she was born on 5 December 1881. There is no further record of a male child with that birth date. Perhaps the newspaper got the gender of the child wrong. Either the newspaper or the death record could have been off one day on the birth of the child.
Daughter Julia died in 1886, at the age of fourteen from bronchitis.[12] Clara married about 1889-90, Ida married in 1894, Maude, born in 1881, married in 1899. The 1900 Census reported Jewett and Lydia Maxfield living in the town and village of Belmont. Jewett was a wheelwright. Lydia had given birth to six children, five of whom were living.[13] Daughter Nellie Maxfield was boarding with Thomas Piper at Franklin, Merrimack County, where she worked knitting hosiery.[14] Clara (Maxfield) Smith lived at Lynn, Essex County, with her son Raymond Smith, 8. She was listed as head of a household with twenty-two boarders. The census listed her as married, but husband George Smith was absent.[15]
The 1910 Census reported Lydia Maxfield, 70, farmer, at Belmont. With her were her daughter Nellie, 31, single, hosiery seamer, also daughter Maud Brette, 28, divorced, hosiery seamer, and granddaughter Edith Brette, 9.[16] Meanwhile, Jewett Maxfield, 78, no occupation, was living at Gilford, with his daughter, Sarah Small, 52, english teacher in common school, and son-in-law John Small, 57, truckman with odd jobs.[17] Clara had married about 1909-10 Benjamin Knight, who had been listed in 1900 as a lodger in Clara's lodging house, then a traveling agent. In 1910 Benjamin, 55, and Clara, 49 lived at Lynn. This was the second marriage for both. Benjamin was proprietor of a lunch room. Clara was proprietress of a lodging house. The household included her child Raymond, 18, and twenty-three lodgers.[18] Jewett died in 1910 from senility, at the home of his daughter Sarah Small.[19]
Daughter Maude married as her second husband George Wellman, and they had children born in 1912, 1914, and 1916. The 1920 Census reported Lidia Maxfield, 80, farmer, at Belmont, with George and Marie [Maude] Wellman and their two daughters. George was also farming.[20] Daughter Clara was living at Milton, Norfolk County, Massachusetts, with her son Raymond Smith, 28, shipyard engineer and his wife Eva, 25.[21] Daughter Nellie, 41, single, lived at Tilton, Belknap County, where she was inspector in an optical factory.[22]
Lydia (Piper) Maxfield died in 1922, at the age of 82, from an aortic embolism.[23] Sarah's husband, John Small, died in 1920; in 1930 she married Clyde White. She was 72, he 69. They were reported in the 1930 Census at Gilford; he was sand cutter at a foundry.[24] Clara had moved with her son Raymond Smith, his wife Eva, and their child Barbara, to Pleasantville, Mount Pleasant town, Westchester County, New York, where Raymond was sales manager for a clock company.[25] Ida (Maxfield) Clough lived at Pittston, Kennebec County, Maine, with her husband Edward Clough, farmer, and their grandson Melvin Clough.[26]
Sarah (Maxfield) (Small) White died in 1937 from Bright's disease.[27] Nellie married in 1940 at the age of 61, and died in 1950. Maude (Maxfield) (Brett) Wellman died in 1951 from carcinoma of the liver.[28] Clara (Maxfield) (Smith) Knight died in 1958 at the age of 97. Ida (Maxfield) Clough died in 1965
Jewett and Lydia (Piper) Maxfield had the following children:
