EZRA FRENCH7 MAXFIELD ( Daniel6, Ezra5, John4, Michael3, John2-1) was born at New Hampshire on June 1836 a son of Daniel Philbrick Maxfiend and his wife Dorothy Ring .[1] He died at San Diego County, California, on 14 May 1910.[2] He married at Los Angeles County, California, on 7 January 1884 MARTIA COTT.[3] She was born at Vermont on March 1854 and died at Los Angeles County on 23 March 1905.[4]
Ezra French Maxfield grew up on a farm in Chichester, Merrimack County, New Hampshire, the second of nine children, at least eight of whom lived to adulthood, and at least five of whom migrated to California as adults. Ezra was named for his grandfather.
Ezra migrated to California before 1860, when he was reported in the census, age 23, living in San Francisco, California, a sash maker.[5] His movements around California can be traced through California voter registration records. He was in San Francisco in 1866, working as a mechanic. In 1873 he registered to vote at San Diego, San Diego County, working as a carpenter. He claimed to be a carpenter in future voter registrations. He registered at Jamul, San Diego County, on 2 August 1879 and 14 September 1880, and at Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, in 1884, 1888, 1890, 1892, and 1896. In 1892 he was described as age 55, 5' 6" light complexion, brown eyes, silver-gray hair. In 1896 he was described as 5' 8 ¾" dark complexion, brown eyes, black hair, first joint of first finger on left hand stiff. At that registration he called himself an organ builder.[6]
In 1875 he received from his father land and buildings in Chichester valued at $ 1000.[7] I do not know how he disposed of this.
The 1880 Census reported Ezra at National City, San Diego County, age 42, single, carpenter.[8]
Ezra French Maxfield married Martia Cott at Los Angeles County, in 1884. He was 45, she 29, a native of Vermont. Although the marriage record gives her maiden name as Maxfield, the death records of two of her sons give her maiden name as Cott or Catt.
The 1900 Census reported the family at Los Angeles consisting of Ezra F., 63, Martia, 46, and children Ezra B., 15, Robert F., 13, and Marshall J., 3. The record indicated that Martia had five children, three of whom were living.[9] The deaths of two children in childhood could explain the gap of ten years between the births of her second and third surviving children.
Martia died in 1905, leaving a family with two young adults and a seven-year old son. Eldest son Ezra married two weeks after his mother's death.
The 1910 Census reported Ezra and son Marshall with Ezra's brother George at Jamul. Ezra was described as a hay farmer, like his brother.[10] He died one month after the census.
Ezra Blaine Maxfield was reported at Los Angeles in the 1910 Census, with his wife Anna, son Maynard, and brother Robert. Ezra worked as an electrician for the gas company, Anna was a dressmaker at home, and Robert drove truck.[11] In 1920 he and Anna lodged in a home at Los Angeles; he was a mechanic with Arc lights.[12]
I have not located son Maynard in the 1920 Census. He married in 1926 and died five weeks later.
The 1930 Census reported Ezra Blaine and Anna Maxfield at Los Angeles, with an adopted daughter, Doris, age two years and seven months. He continued to be an electrician for a gas and electric company.[13] In the 1940 Census Ezra B. described himself as single, Anna described herself as divorced. They were both in Los Angeles, at different locations. Ezra B., 55, was an inspector for the power and light company. Anna lived with her daughter Doris and three boarders. According to these records, Ezra B. completed high school, and Anna completed eighth grade.[14] Ezra died in 1948. Anna was reported living alone at Los Angeles in 1950.[15] She died in 1979.
Robert French Maxfield reported for the draft on 5 June 1917, at Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah. He was an expressman for American Express, single, Caucasian, tall, slender, with brown eyes and brown hair.[16] The next war, he reported for the draft at Sacramento County, California, where he was described as not employed, and gave his contact as the local Carpenters' Union.[17] He died at San Francisco in 1947.
Marshall Joseph Maxfield was reported in the 1930 Census, at Brooklyn, New York, age 32, electrical engineer, veteran of World War I, with his wife Macedona, a native of New York and a teacher in public school.[18] His death in 1935 was reported in the New York Times:[19]
Marshall Joseph Maxfield, a teacher of electrical construction in the Haaren Cooperative High School in Manhattan, died on Sunday at his home, 1265 East Thirty-first Street, Brooklyn, of pneumonia. He was born in California thirty-seven years ago and attended the University of Southern California and Penn State College. His widow, Macedonia Reynolds Maxfield survives him. |
