Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Eighth Generation

EMMA R.8 MAXFIELD (Chauncey7, Harry6, William5, David4, Eliphalet3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at Minnesota on 10 March 1861 (CA D), a child of Chauncey L. Maxfield and his wife Rosetta Woodworth. Emma grew up on the farm of her parents at Lansing, Mower County, Minnesota. She was reported there, age 9 in the 1870 census, age 19 in the 1880 census, and age 24 in the 1885 Minnesota census. Her parents both died in 1893. The 1895 Minnesota census (MN Cen 1895: 77:13) reported Miss Emma Maxfield, 34, farmer, born Minnesota, at Lansing. Living with her was David Maxfield, 14, born Missouri. Could this be her future husband? Their ages are given inconsistently in various records, but her husband David, would have been about 17 at that time, according to the 1900 census, born at Kansas to a mother born at Missouri.

Emma Maxfield married DAVID MAXFIELD at Los Angeles County, California, on 25 November 1898 (Rootsweb M). According to this record Emma was 25, born Minnesota, David was 21, born Kansas. According to other information, David added one year to his age, and Emma subtracted 12 years from her age. The 1900 Census (92:14A) reported this couple at Rowland Township, Los Angeles County, California:

Name Related Race Sex Born MS B FB MB Occupation
Maxfield, David head W M Aug 1878 M1 KS Unk MO farmer
Maxfield, Emma R. wife W F Mar 1871 M1 MN VT VT

Emma had no children. She evidently continued to subtract ten years from her age. The 1910 Census (86:24A) reported the family at San Bernardino Road, Rowland Township:

48 Maxfield, David head M W 31 M1 KS unk unk orchardist, orange grove
49 Maxfield, Emma wife F W 49 M1 MN VT VT none
50 Maxfield, Chauncey B. son M W 9 S CA KS MN none

David and Emma had been married eleven years; Emma had given birth to one child, who was living. They appear to have given their true ages.

Some time between 1910 and 1920 David and Emma divorced, and I find no further record of David. The 1920 Census (103:4B) reported Emma and son at San Bernardino Boulevard, Covina, Los Angeles County, California:

Emma Maxfield married as her second husband DANIEL SAMUEL FOSTER, about 1925/6 (married nine years according to his obituary). He was born on the island of Corfu, Greece, on 10 February 1860 (Covina Citizen, 16 Oct 1936, p. 3). Daniel Foster died on 9 October 1936 (Covina Citizen, 16 Oct 1936, p. 3). The obituary called him a citrus grower, gave his birth date and place, his wife's name, and his step-son, C. G. Maxfield of Palm Springs. Emma died at San Bernardino County on 13 February 1940 (CA D)

Emma Maxfield and her first husband David Maxfield had the following child:

  1. CHAUNCEY GEORGE9 MAXFIELD b. at California on 23 October 1901
