LAWRENCE BLANCHARD9 MAXFIELD (Charles8-7, Warren6-5, Timothy4-3-2, John1 ) was born at Fairhaven, Bristol County, Massachusetts, on 12 March 1908 a son of Charles Albert Maxfield and his wife Bertha Tirrell.[1] He died at New Bedford, Bristol County, on 5 December 1983.[2] He married at New Bedford on 5 October 1929 EMILY MAY WROUGHTON.[3] She was born at New Bedford on 17 March 1905, a daughter of John Wroughton and his wife Mary Rowe.[4] She died at Fairhaven on 6 June 1957.[5]

The 1930 Census reported Lawrence and Emily living in New Bedford with her mother, Mary Wroughton.[6] In 1940 they were living in the Maxfield family homestead, 91 Bridge Street, Fairhaven. The family consisted of Lawrence, 32, Emily, 35, their son Roy, 9, and her mother, Mary Wroughton, 71. In 1935 they had already moved to this address. Lawrence had completed four years of high school; Emily completed four years of college. Mary Wroughton was born at Lancashire, England.[7]

Lawrence was a plumber throughout his adult life, first apprenticed to his father, then running his own business.[8]

Lawrence was a member of the Masonic order and the Grange and a volunteer fireman. He was elected Captain of Fairhaven Fire Company # 2 in 1944. He served as a Sewer and Water Commissioner for the town of Fairhaven for several terms. He was a member of First Congregational Church (United Church of Christ), Fairhaven.[9]

Emily (Wroughton) Maxfield died on 6 June 1957. The Fairhaven Star reported:[10]

She died unexpectedly at her home last Thursday. Her death was ruled a suicide by Dr. William Rosen, medical examiner. She has been depressed since the death of her mother, Mrs. Mary Wroughton, May 24.
Another contributor to her depression could have been the birth of a child on 13 May to another man's wife,[11] believed by many to be Lawrence's son.

In his later years Lawrence divided the homestead on Bridge Street into apartments and rented them out, and lived in an apartment on Gilette Road, Fairhaven.

Roy Maxfield, the only child of Lawrence and Emily, graduated from Fairhaven High School, and was serving in the military in October of 1950.[12] He married in 1952. After military service and marriage and the births of two children, he returned to school. He graduated from Northeastern University, Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, in 1959, with a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering.[13] The remainder of their adult lives, Roy and his wife Annette lived in California, where Roy worked as an engineer. The following picture, apparently a high school senior class photo, was given to his Aunt Jean, and came into my possession upon her death.

Lawrence Charles Maxfield, eldest child of Roy and Annette, served in the Air Force from 13 August 1971 to 9 July 1974.[14] The following obituary was published in the Riverside, San Bernardino County, California Press Enterprise:[15]

CORONA: MAXFIELD, LARRY "MAX"

Larry "Max Maxfield stepped into eternity on Friday, July 29, 2005 in Corona, CA. He was born on March 5, 1953 in Victorville, CA., to Roy and Annette Maxfield. He was a 1971 graduate of Rolling Hills High School in Palos Verdes, and subsequently served our country in the U.S. Air Force, honorable discharged in 1974. He then received his BA degree in Fine Art from Cal State Fullerton in 1980. Max married Janine Atwood on May 17, 1980. Together they raised two incredible children, Jessica and Nicholas. Max was a gifted artist and used his talents not only to support his family, but to bless and provide enjoyment for friends and acquaintances throughout the community. He was most recently employed as a web designer at American Bath Factory of Corona. Max had a passion for life, and touched people with his enthusiasm and contagious optimism wherever he went. He especially loved working with children, and recently received his 15-year pin as AWANA Commander at the Corona Evangelical Free Church, where he and his family are active members. Max was preceded in death by his mother, Annette Maxfield and is survived by his father, Roy Maxfield of Anaheim; his wife of 25 years, Janine; his children, Jessica and Nicholas; his brother, Lance Maxfield; his sister, Jane Green of San Jose and his sister, Julie Maxfield; many nieces and nephews, and a host of friends. . . .
