Descendants of Seth and James Maxfield
of Overton County, Tennessee
Second Generation

JAMES2 MAXFIELD (perhaps John1) was born at Pennsylvania about 1776/7 (1850 census), the child of an unidentified probably immigrant perhaps named JOHN MAXFIELD. James Maxfield's name may appear on a tax list in Washington County, Virginia, in the 1790s (Drake). He was assessed at Warren County, Kentucky, in 1800/1 (Ky Census 1800).

James Maxfield married SARAH BROTHERS perhaps about 1810. Sarah was born at North Carolina in 1781/2 (1850 census) and died at Tennessee perhaps in 1860 (Taylor).

The 1840 Census (533:34) reported the James Maxfield family at Overton County, Tennessee, consisting of a man and a woman in their 60s, a man and a woman in their 20s, and two young men between 15 and 20. This can be accounted as James and Sarah, although Sarah's age is overestimated compared to the 1850 census; son George would be between 20 and 30, and son Byrd between fifteen and twenty. Not accounted for are the woman in her 20s and one male between fifteen and twenty.

The 1850 census (892:77) reported this family at Overton County, next on the list to son Byrd, as follows:

Name Age Sex Occupation R.E. Birthplace Other
James Maxfield 70 M farmer $1500 PA illiterate
Sarah Maxfield 68 F NC illiterate
