John Maxfield came to America on the Bristol, from Bristol, arriving at New York City on 4 January 1836, age 27 (NY Pass).
John Maxfield found employment at the Boonton Iron Works for forty-seven years (Morris Co His). At some time before 1850 he married MARY ________, who was born at New York about 1812/3. They had no children.
The 1850 census (454:468) reported John and Mary Maxfield, ages 39 and 37, at Pequannock Township, Morris County, New Jersey. John was a blacksmith. Mary died on 24 January 1858 (find).
The 1860 census (704:116) reported John Maxfield, 50, blacksmith, in the same township, Boonton Post Office, residing with John A. Proctor, 23, nailor, and Mary Van Minkle, 69, domestic.
In 1870 (877:1:17B) John Maxfield, 60, resided at Boonton Township in the household of Thomas and Kate Condon. The 1880 census (792:30C) found John Maxfield, 71, blacksmith, at Boonton.
John Maxfield was probably a non-believer, as the Boston Investigator, the journal of the American Secular Union, reported his payment of a subscription to the Investigator and contributions to the Secular Union (Inv, 20 Nov 1889; 16 Jul 1890, etc.).
The 1895 New Jersey census (NJ Cens 1895 94:61) reported John Maxfield, over 60, at Boonton. John Maxfield died on 7 August 1896 (find).
