ALLEN7 REED (Lemuel6, Anna5, Thomas4, William3, James2, William1 ) was born at Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts, on 4 January 1815 a son of Lemuel Reed and his wife Fally Woodmansee,[1] and died at Dartmouth on 22 November 1889.[2] He married at Dartmouth on 24 November 1839 CAROLINE G. TRIPP.[3] She was born at Westport, Bristol County, on 24 December 1821, a daughter of Otis and Cynthia Tripp.[4] She died at Dartmouth on 3 January 1891.[5]
Allen Reed grew up on the family farm in northwestern Dartmouth, the fourth of thirteen children. When he was twenty-four years old, and she seventeen, he married Caroline Tripp. The lived in Westport in the early years of their marriage, but lived and farmed in Dartmouth most of their lives. Allen died two days before his fiftieth wedding anniversary. They had seven children, all of whom reached adulthood. Ten years after their marriage, Caroline's brother Andrew married Allen's sister Anna. Caroline's brother Peleg married Allen's sister Lavina, and after her death married Allen's sister Mary Ann. All this intertwined the families more intimately together.
The 1860 Census reported the family in Dartmouth, North Dartmouth Post Office, as follows:[6]

The record furtheer indicated that Caroline, Franklin, John and Cynthia were all attending school. Eldest son, William, age 19, was no longer in the home.
In the following decade, Jane married in 1864 and Caroline married in 1867. William died in 1867, from consumption, unmarried.[7] The 1870 Census found Allen and Caroline at home with their three youngest children.[8] Daughter Jane, 26, lived in Westport with her husband, 31, mariner, and their 4 year old daughter.[9] Daughter Carrie, 24, had moved to Dighton, Bristol County, where her husband, Eugene Rose, 22, worked as a moulder; they had a two-year-old son.[10] I cannot identify with any confidence ther whereabouts of son Franklin.
Son John married in 1873. The 1880 Census reported Allen and Caroline at home with only two of their children. Youngest daughter Emma remained at home, doing housework. Son Franklin, 31, was described as a farmer, with general disability. It reported him to be married, although I have not found a record of his marriage or name of his spouse.[11]
Frank died in November of 1880, from consumption; the death record also declared him to be married.[12] Daughter Addie married in 1883, leaving only Emma at home with her parents.
Allen Reed died in 1889 from erysipelas.[13] Caroline died in 1891 from gastric fever.[14] Emma got married the following year, to her cousin Ezekiel W. Reed; she was 32 years old, he 30.
Jane Reed had married William Whalon, and they lived in Westport, where he was described in censuses as a mariner (1870), fisherman (1880), day laborer (1900), and farmer with a general farm (1910, 1920). They were married fifty-two years before Jane died. They had six children, five of whom lived to adulthood, three of whom married.[15]
Caroline Reed married Eugene Rose, and they lived at Dighton, where he was described in censuses as a moulder (1870), nickel plater (1880), and pattern Maker (1900). They had four chidren: two were twins, who died in infancy, and their first-born son died at nineteen years from typhoid fever. Only one child, Bertrand, lived to marry and have a family. Caroline died at the age of forty-two, from consumption. Eugene remarried two years later.[16]
John Reed married and lived at Westport, where he was described at marriage as a teamster, in the 1900 Census as an ice dealer, and on his death record as a retired contractor. He died from phthisis. They had one son, Arthur, who married and lived in Westport, where he was described as a merchant (1900), merchant with a grocery store, (1910), cattle dealer (1920), and a county commissioner for Bristool County (1930).[17]
Addie Reed married Daniel Whalon, brother of William Whalon, Jane Reed's husband. Daniel was a forty-one year old widower; Addie was thirty. Daniel farmed in Westport.[18]
Emma Reed was thirty-two years old when she married her cousin, Ezekiel Reed. He farmed, and later worked on the highway, in Dartmouth.[19]
Allen Reed and his wife Caroline Tripp had the following children:
