Seventh Generation

WARREN H.7 REED (Lemuel6, Anna5, Thomas4, William3, James2, William1 ) was born at Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts on 27 August 1821 a son of Lemuel Reed and his wife Fally Woodmansee,[1] and died at Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts, on 4 October 1867.[2] He married at New Bedford, Bristol County, on 15 June 1849 LYDIA B. TRIPP.[3] She was born at Dartmouth on 17 November 1827, a daughter of Job Tripp and his wife Betsey Cowen.[4] She died at Dartmouth on 19 December 1904.[5] Lydia married second at Westport, Bristol County, on 12 October 1873 CANAAN GIFFORD.[6] He was born at Dartmouth on 21 March 1801, a son of Wilbur Gifford and his wife Elizabeth Allen. He died at Westport on 24 August 1879.[7] This was Canaan's third marriage. Canaan Gifford had first married at Dartmouth on 20 August 1829 MARIA PEARCE.[8] He second married at Westport on 20 March 1853 MARY ANN (ELDRIDGE) PEASE,[9] who was born at Falmouth, Barnstable County, Massachusetts, on 12 May 1804[10] and died at Westport on 14 April 1871.[11] Mary Ann had previously married at Falmouth on 10 September 1829 WILLIAM G. PEASE,[12] who was born at Chilmark, Dukes County, Massachusetts, on 28 February, 1801,[13] and died at New Bedford on 11 December 1847.[14]

Warren Reed grew up on the family farm in northwestern Dartmouth, the eighth of thirteen children. After marriage, he remained in Dartmouth for a few years, where he farmed. However, by 1853 he had moved to Fairhaven, where he worked as a stone mason. He was reported there in the 1855 State Census with his wife and their first two children.[15] By 1860 the family had grown to include four children,[16] and by 1865, five children.[17]

Warren Reed died in 1867 from insanity.[18] He died at Taunton, the site of the State Lunatic Hospital, where he probably was an inmate. Warren was forty-six years old. He left his thirty-nine year old widow with six children, ages 16, 14, 11, 8, 2, and 10 months.

Widow Lydia (Tripp) Reed moved to Westport with her six children, as reported in the 1870 Census:[19]

Irving Reed was also attending school.

The next few years brought much change in the family. Youngest child Horatio, age 3, died in November of 1870, from consumption.[20] Eldest child Ruth married in 1871. In 1873 Lydia (Tripp) Reed remarried. Her second husband, Canaan Gifford was seventy-two years old and this was his third marriage. He farmed in Westport, ans died within six year of this final marriage.

Twice widowed Lydia (Tripp) (Reed) Gifford, 51, appeared in the 1880 Census in Dartmouth with her son Irving, 21, farm laborer, and her daughter, Melvina, 15, doing house work and attending school.[21] Daughter Ruth and her husband John Reed lived in Dartmouth with their four children; John worked in a mill.[22] I have not found Horace or Ansel in that census.

Son Irving Reed married in 1883 and farmed at Dartmouth. Melvina married her cousin, Philip H. Reed, in 1886; he was 58, she 21. Philip died in 1896. A year and four months after his death, Melvina married George Gifford, a painter from Westport. Son Ansel Reed, who lived in Dartmouth and worked as a fisherman, married in 1889. Two and a half years later his wife died. A year and a half after her death Ansel married again; within two years of his second marriage, Ansel died from pleurisy, age thirty-nine.[23] Son Horace Reed died in 1892, age thirty-eight, unmarried.[24] The 1900 Census reported Lydia (Tripp) (Reed) Gifford, 72, living with her daughter Malvina (Reed) (Reed) Gifford in Dartmouth.[25]
