The Ancestors and Descendants of
Albert Martin (1855-1923)
Sixth Generation

HENRY6 MARTIN (Albert5, Mary Gochenauer4) was born at Smithville, Providence Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, on 10 June 1882 a son of Albert Martin and his wife Elizabeth Groff, and died at Lancaster, Lancaster County, on 2 April 1957.[1] He married at Quarryville, Lancaster County, on 31 August 1903 CORA ESTELLE HOWETT.[2] She was born at East Drumore Township, Lancaster County, on 3 September 1882, a daughter of Amos Watson Howett and his wife Clara May Johnson.[3] She died at Lancaster on 13 March 1970.[4]

Henry Martin was the eldest of three children. His mother commited suicide before his third birthday. I don't have information on what happened to Henry and his siblings in those childhood years. When he was seventeen, the 1900 Census reported Henry Martin at East Drumore Township, boarding with Aaron and Mary Groff. Henry was a blacksmith doing coach work.[5]

Cora Estelle Howett was the second of nine children. She was born in East Drumore Township, however by 1900 her family had moved to Lancaster. But the 1900 Census reported Cora living with her maternal grandparents, Stephen and Mary (Brown) Johnson, in Providence Township.[6] Henry and Cora married in 1903 at "Oak Bottom," near Quarryville.[7]

The 1910 Census reported the family in Providence Township. Henry (called Harry by the census taker) worked as a baker in a bake shop. The family included Henry and Cora, daughters Helen, 6, and Leola, 3, and Cora's grandmother, Mary Johnson, 70.[8]

By 1916 the family had moved to 532 North Mary Street, in Lancaster, where Henry worked as a motorman.[9] Motorman was a term used for a trolley conductor.

The 1920 Census reported this family at the above address, consisting of Henry, 37, motorman, Cora, wife, 37, daughter Helen, 15, in school, daughter Mary, 13, in school, Henry's father, Albert Martin, 64, working as a packer of leaf tobacco, and Cora's grandmother, Mary Johnson, 79.[10] Nearby, at 536 Mary Street, lived Cora's parents, Amos and Clara Howett, with three of their children.[11]

Helen married in 1922, Mary Leora in 1927. Henry's father Albert had died in 1923; Cora's grandmother Mary Johnson died in 1929. The 1930 Census reported a very empty nest on Mary Street, consisting only of Henry and Cora, both 47.[12] In 1940 the couple was at the same place. The only change was that Henry was now a bus driver, the trolley having gone out of use.[13]

In 1950 the couple had moved to 834 East Orange Street, in Lancaster. Although family members said he retired in 1940, the 1950 city directory still listed him as a bus driver.[14]
