Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Sixth Generation

BENJAMIN6 MAXFIELD (possibly Warren5, Timothy4-3-2 John1) was born in Massachusetts on 29 July 1812 and died at California on 7 April 1866.[1] He was probably child of Warren Maxfield and his wife Ruby Peckham. He married (intentions published at New Bedford, Bristol County, Massachusetts, on 22 September 1834)[2] MARY LaMUNYON KING. A daughter of Stephen and Phebe L. King, she was born at Tiverton, Newport County, Rhode Island, on 3 November 1809 and died at Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island, on 12 January 1904.[3]

I have not found a record that clearly states that Benjamin was a child of Warren and Ruby. However I believe he was probably their child for the following reasons:

  1. Benjamin F. Maxfield (1835-1915), who, according to his marriage and death records was a child of Benjamin and Mary Maxfield born at New Bedford, was resident with Ephraim Maxfield, a son of Warren and Ruby, in the 1850, 1855, 1860 and 1870 censuses.
  2. Mary M. Maxfield (about 1836-1858), a daughter of Benjamin and Mary according to her marriage and death records, was in the 1855 census living with Mary "Polly" Maxfield, the sister of Warren Maxfield.
  3. The 1820 and 1830 census records indicate a male child in the age group of Benjamin, and none other has been identified.

The 1840 census reported this family in New Bedford.[4] That census only reported family members in age and sex groups. A possible explanation of this census record follows::

age and gender possible identity
male 30-39 Benjamin, 27
female 30-39 Mary, 30
male 5-9 George, 5
male 5-9 Benjamin, 5
female 0-4 Mary, 4
male 0-4 unidentified
female 0-4 unidentified

Benjamin Maxfield was called a "mason" in records from 1843 through 1847. He was involved in property transfers in New Bedford:

It would appear that Benjamin Maxfield bought a place in New Bedford, but mortgaged it, and did not pay for it, so the property was foreclosed.

Benjamin Maxfield joined the "New Bedford and Sacramento Mutual Mining Company," and set sail from New Bedford to California on the America on 1 April 1849.[8] He joined the gold rush, and evidently never returned, abandoning his family and not keeping up payments on their home.

The 1850 census nevertheless reported Benjamin Maxfield with his family in New Bedford, perhaps thinking that his absence was temporary:[9]

Name Age Sex Occupation R.E. Birthplace Other
Benjamin Maxfield 36 M mason $1500 Mass.
Mary Maxfield 40 F RI illiterate
Mary Maxfield 13 F Mass.
Emily B. Maxfield 8 F Mass.
Phebe A. Maxfield 5 F Mass.
Charles H. Maxfield 4 M Mass.

The two oldest sons were no longer at home. George, 15, lived at New Bedford in the household of William G. Parker 35 trader and Mary Ann 31.[10] Son Benjamin, 15, was with his Uncle Ephraim at Chilmark, Dukes County, Massachusetts.[11]

The 1849 New Bedford City Directory reported "Maxfield, Benjamin, mason, h[ome]. 160 Mill."[12] The 1852[13] and 1856 city directories also reported him at 160 Mill Street, but followed by the word "California."[14]

The 1855 Massachusetts State census also reported Benjamin Maxfield at New Bedford. The family consisted of Benjamin Maxfield, 42, mason, Mary L. Maxfield, 44, George B Maxfield, 20, rigger, Mary M Maxfield, 18, Phebe A Maxfield, 11, Charles H Maxfield, 10, and Sarah E Maxfield, 8.[15] Son Benjamin was with his uncle Ephraim at Chilmark.[16] Emily lived at New Bedford with Simeon and Louisa West.[17]

Daughter Mary had married in 1857 and died in 1858. By 1860 George had joined his father Benjamin in California, while Mary remained at New Bedford. That year the census reported:

Perhaps the census taker thought George's move to California was temporary.

The 1865 state census reported Mary L. Maxfield, 54, "widow," with Phebe A. Maxfield, 21, clockmaker, and Charles A. Maxfield, 19, printer, at New Bedford. They were in the household of Hannah Manchester, 57, widow, Mary J. Brown, 83, widow, Fally Macomber, 66, widow, and John King, 60, single, seaman. All were born at Rhode Island except the Maxfield children.[24] Perhaps they were related in some way? Benjamin continued to live with Uncle Ephraim and Emily continued with the Wests.[25]

The New Bedford Mercury reported the death of Benjamin Maxfield, formerly of New Bedford, in California, on 7 April 1866, age 53 years, 8 months and 9 days.[26]

Emily married in 1866 and Sarah in 1868. The 1870 Census reported Mary L. Maxfield in the household of her daughter and son-in-law at New Bedford:[27]

Name Age Sex Race Occupation R.E. P.E. Birth Other
Gifford, Charles H. 27 M W dealer in clothing #3000 MA
Gifford, Sarah 23 F W keeping house MA
Gifford, Walter M. 1 M W at home MA
Maxfield, Mary L. 60 F W no occupation RI
Maxfield, Phebe A. 27 F W cloak maker MA

Benjamin was still with Uncle Ephraim in Chilmark.[28] Although George does not appear in the 1870 Census, a George Randall Maxfield, 33, seaman, registered to vote at San Francisco, California, on 6 September 1870.[29] Charles H. Maxfield, who had married in 1867, was reported head of a household at New Bedford. He was 25, and clerk in a store, his wife, Celia, was keeping house. Harriet Hathaway, 14, also lived in their home.[30]

The 1880 census reported the following:

The 1900 Census reported the following:

Mary L. Maxfield died at Providence on 12 January 1904, from acute bronchitis, acute articular rheumatism, and endocarditis.[39]

Benjamin Maxfield, the son, lived with his uncle Ephraim Maxfield at Chilmark until Ephraim's death, and pursued Ephraim's trade as a mason. At the age of thirty-nine he married twenty-two year old Fannie B. Norton, daughter of William and Martha Norton. Married in 1874, she died in 1885 from a tumor.[40] Benjamin was reported boarding at West Tisbury in the 1900 and 1910 censuses. He was a mason in 1900, had his own income in 1910.[41] He died in 1915 from chronic Bright's disease of the kidney.[42]

Charles Henry Maxfield fought in the Civil War, serving in the 3rd Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Militia (infantry), Company G, from 26 September 1862 to 26 June 1863.[43] He married at New Bedford when he was 22 and she 28, Celia Ann (Drew) Hathaway. Married in 1867, Charles was reported divorced in the 1880 Census when he was boarding at 124 Union Street, New Bedford. He was recorded as a clerk in a store in 1870, a clothing clerk in 1880. He married Sophronie Bassett in 1884; she died from typhoid fever ten years later.[44] In 1900, a salesman of dry goods, he was boarding at Providence in the home of Isabel Loftus. In 1906 he married Lillian Loftus, who was living with her mother Isabel, in the home where Charles was boarding, in 1900. At the time of marriage he was 61, she 39. In 1910 and 1920 Charles and Lillian were living at East Providence, Providence County.[45] Charles died in 1922 from a cerebral hemorrhage and uraemia.[46] Lillian died two years later with carcinoma of the right breast.[47]
