The 1860 census contained two reports of George Maxfield, either of which or both of which could be this George Maxfield. At New Bedford (MA 6:542) George R. Maxfield, age 24, rigger, was living in the household of George P. and Harriet M. Gardner, in the same building but a separate household from his mother. At Foster Barr Township, Yuba County, California, the same township in which his father was reported, the census (72:831) reported George P. Maxfield, age 25, born in Massachusetts, miner.
George Maxfield married MINERVA ________, probably before the birth of their child in California about 1877/8. She was born in New York about 1846/7, as reported at San Francisco, California, in the 1880 census:

Perhaps he is the George Randolph Maxfield who registered to vote in 1869 at San Diego, and the George Randall Maxfield who registered to vote at San Francisco in 1870. Both were listed as seamen born at Massachusetts, age 30 at San Diego, age 33 at San Francisco (CA V Reg).
