Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Seventh Generation

GEORGE R.7 MAXFIELD (Benjamin6, possibly Warren5, Timothy4-3-2 John1) was born at New Bedford, Massachusetts, about 1834/5, a child of Benjamin Maxfield and his wife Mary King. The 1850 census (Bristol Co. 372) reported Benjamin A Maxfield, age 15, living in the household of William G. and Mary Ann Baker.

George Maxfield married BETSEY CHASE at New Bedford on 21 October 1855 (VR MA 87:106:243, NB Merc M 787). Betsey was born at Westport, Massachusetts, about 1838, a child of Jonathan and Olive Chase. The marriage was recorded in the vital records as follows:

George Maxfield, New Bedford, 20, rigger, b. New Bedford to Benjamin and Mary, 1st;
Betsey Chase, New Bedford, 17, b. Westport to Jonathan and Olive, 1st;
Moses Wood, clergy
In less than two years, Betsey died, at New Bedford, on 10 June 1857, age 19 years (NB Merc D 564).

The 1860 census contained two reports of George Maxfield, either of which or both of which could be this George Maxfield. At New Bedford (MA 6:542) George R. Maxfield, age 24, rigger, was living in the household of George P. and Harriet M. Gardner, in the same building but a separate household from his mother. At Foster Barr Township, Yuba County, California, the same township in which his father was reported, the census (72:831) reported George P. Maxfield, age 25, born in Massachusetts, miner.

George Maxfield married MINERVA ________, probably before the birth of their child in California about 1877/8. She was born in New York about 1846/7, as reported at San Francisco, California, in the 1880 census:

Line Name Race Sex Age Related MS Occupation B FB MB
47 Maxfield, George R. W M 43 M sailor MA
48 Maxfield, Minerva W F 33 wife M keeping house NY SC NY
49 Maxfield, Georgie E. W F 2 daughter S CA MA NY

Perhaps he is the George Randolph Maxfield who registered to vote in 1869 at San Diego, and the George Randall Maxfield who registered to vote at San Francisco in 1870. Both were listed as seamen born at Massachusetts, age 30 at San Diego, age 33 at San Francisco (CA V Reg).

George Maxfield and his second wife Minerva had the following child:

  1. GEORGIE E.8 MAXFIELD
    • b. in California about 1877/8 (1880 census)
