JAMES I.6 MAXFIELD (Warren5, Timothy4-3-2, John1), a child of Warren Maxfield and his wife Ruby Peckham, was born at Massachusetts, about 1821-2,[1] and died before the 1855 state census. He married at New Bedford, Bristol County, Massachusetts, on 4 December 1844 LOUISA JANE TRIPP, a daughter of Pardon and Sarah F. Tripp.[2] She was born at New Bedford on February 1828,[3] and died at East Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island, on 19 September 1902.[4]
James, the tenth of ten children, was about fifteen years old when his father died. Although described on his marriage record and the 1850 Census as a mason, he also went to sea. He left from the port of Fairhaven, Bristol County, on 30 July 1849 on the Florida as a seaman.[5] I have no record of him after the 1850 Census, when he would have been about twenty-eight years old. Louisa was described on their marriage record as a tailoress.
The James Maxfield family was recorded in two places in the 1850 Census, in both Fairhaven and New Bedford. Here is the New Bedford record:[6]

James J. Maxfield | 28 | M | mason | Mass | ||

The 1855 Massachusetts Census reported Louisa and her two sons at Fairhaven with her parents:[8]

The 1860 Census found Louisa Maxfield and her two children living in Taunton, Massachusetts, with Ezra Carroll, 31, painter, Parah, 28, 2 children, and Fred Tripp, 22, painter. The Maxfields in the household were recorded as follows:[9]

In 1865, Louisa Maxfield, widow, 38, tailoress, was living at New Bedford with her son, James, 15.[10]
Louise was living with her son Charles at Worcester at the time of the 1870 census.[11] Charles died in 1874. She lived with her son James at East Providence in 1880 and 1900.[12]
